About the Lake:

One of the most interesting facts about Berryessa Lake is that it contains more shoreline than Lake Tahoe. The lake has a surface acreage of 17,000 and there are 165 miles of shoreline. This is considered one of the best lakes for boating and fishing in California, and although the levels of mercury are high and some fish are unsuitable for human consumption, the lake remains one of the most popular in the area.

Please note that the north end of the lake has a tendency to be a bit shallow, and the entire eastern shoreline is off limits to visitors. The southern area of the lake is much deeper and offers beautiful views of the numerous trees and incredible vistas.

That spillway is known as a “glory hole” and is there to prevent the reservoir from becoming too full. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHjHKvyx5NM for a video of one while there is water flowing into it.
