About the Lake:

Lake Thomas A. Edison was named for the famous inventor and was finished in 1954 as part of a hydroelectric project. Numerous lakes in this area, including Lake Florence and Lake Huntington are also part of this project which supplies power to residents in the area. The lake is however open to boating and fishing and is a popular destination for those looking to enjoy the peaceful tranquility of nature. The fishing is very good and boaters appreciate the calm waters.

Camping is quite popular, making this a great place to stay for a weekend or a longer vacation. Hiking is also allowed and day-use visitors always like to use the picnic facilities. There is a full service store at the lake for provisions and overall, this is a great place to get away from it all.

The relative seclusion means that the lake is never overcrowded. Although it is quite popular, most boaters find that they have more than enough room and plenty of peace and quiet during their stay here. This is a popular backcountry hiking location, but the enforced rules keep everything pretty peaceful.

Boat Launches:

Free use boat launches are located at the lake for public use. Please contact lake management for more information.

What You Need to Know:

The fishing here is particularly good, especially if you are an angler or interested in trout. You can have up to 5 for the day and a total of 10 fish in your possession at any one time. Canoeing and kayaking are allowed, but it is recommended to stay close to the shoreline. The lake does have a 15mph speed limit posted, so please make sure that you follow these guidelines. All vessels must be operated under state and federal laws. Sailboating is not recommended on the lake due to poor wind consistency.

A special note from lake management: "Lodging, tent cabins, store, showers are available at the Vermillion Valley Resort located on Edison Lake. Also, hikers will find backpacking supplies, including white gas by the ounce, food, and limited clothing available, as well as telephone, and high-speed Internet access. The Resort also offers a Re-supply Package Service for hikers traveling the John Muir Trail/Pacific Crest Trail.

Camping is available at Vermillion Campground and Mono Creek. Advanced reservations are available for both campgrounds by contacting www.recreation.gov or at 1.877.444.6777. Reservations must be made up to 3 day in advance of arrival. There are active bears in the area so please use the food storage boxes provided in the campgrounds."

How to Get There:

Take Hwy 168 east from Clovis to Huntington Lake. At Huntington Lake take the Kaiser Pass Road (road not recommended for RV's or large trailers) east 17 miles to the Edison Lake turnoff. Turn left and travel 7 miles to the lake. Travel time from Clovis is 2 1/2 hours. Kaiser Pass Road is accessible late May through November.
