More Fishing and Boating Lexicon

earthwormEarthworm - In fishing, this is a common term that is used to refer to the wide variety of different fishing worms that can be used for baiting, including night crawlers, garden works, dillys, leaf worms and red wigglers.

Edge - This describes the borders that are created by a change in the natural vegetation or structure within a lake. Some examples of edges are the edges from a drop off, tree lines and weed lines.

Egg Sinker - This is an egg shaped weight for fishing possessing a hole through its center that makes it possible for a line to be passed through.

Electro Fishing or Electro Shocking - This is a term that is used to describe the use of electrical current in order to stun fish temporarily, typically when a fish survey is being taken.

Eutrophic - This is a word that is used to describe waters that are highly fertile, which are characterized by nutrient rich and warm shallow basis.

Eyelets - These are the rings or the line guides present on a fishing rod, and fishing line is passed through them.

False Casting or False Cast - This means to fly cast line in the air, not allowing it to touch the water, in order to increase how much line you have to work with and to perfect your accuracy to your intended target.

Fan Cast - This term refers to making a number of casts, each only a few degrees from the last, in order to cover a span of a half circle. This act is often used as a means of locating fish that are actively feeding.

Feeding Times - This term is used to describe the times of day where the fish are at their most active. These feeding times are often associated with the sun and moon positions, and are referred to more commonly as solunar tables.

Filamentous Algae - This is a type of algae that is characterized by having long chains of cells that are attached in order to give it a stringy appearance and feeling in the water.

Fillet - This term refers to the method of separating a fish's meaty portion from its skin or bone using a sharp knife in order to prepare the fish meat for human consumption.

Finesse Fishing - This is a technique for angling that is characterized by using light tackle, including light line, light reels, light rods and artificially made baits. It is often a productive method in water that is clear and fairly uncluttered.

Fingerling - This is a young fish that is only approximately 2 inches long, or a finger in length.

Fisherman - This is someone that engages in fishing for the purpose of food, sport or occupation.
