fishingDissolved Oxygen - This is the amount of usable or free oxygen present in the water. Dissolved oxygen is typically measured in terms of parts per million or ppm.

Dobsonfly - This is a type of large aquatic insect, and its larva is popular for use as hellgrammite bait.

Doll Fly - This is a trademark for a hackle-wrapped jig with a chenille body.

Doodle Sock - Also known as doodle socking, this is a type of long pole or cane pole fishing that involves bait or a lure being repeatedly dipped and then dragged through fishing structures. It is an especially common method for fishing for crappie and largemouth bath and is very effective when fish happen to be holding tight to their cover.

Dorsal Fin - This is a median fin that is located down along the back of many types of fish. It is typically supported with rays, and they sometimes five this fan an appearance similar to a sail or a fan. Some fish have two dorsal fins.

Dough Ball - This is a ball of bait that is made out of bread or dough that has been specially prepared for the purpose of bait fishing and its most common use is in carp fishing.

Down Lake - Also known as down shore, down river, down stream or down current, these are simply terms that refer to directions.

Drag - This is the device on a fishing reel that allows the line to be paid out while under pressure even when the reel is engaged and set correctly, allowing it to ensure against breakage of the line.

Draw Down - This is the act of lowering the water level in a lake in order to meet a specific purpose.

Drift Boating or Drift Fishing - These are techniques that are used in order to finish while drifting along with the current, sometimes in a drifting boat.

Drop Off - This is a sudden increase in the depth of a lake, often created by small creek channels, canyons, washes, pinnacles and other topographical features that are submerged beneath the water.

Drop Shot - This is a technique for tackle rigging that involves employing a hook that is tied to the line from between four inches and four feet higher than the sinker. The hook is generally attached by way of a Palomar knot. The weight is typically attached from the knot to the tag line. The hook will be set using a 90 degree angle from the line, and the hook point is typically going to be pointing in the direction of the pole, upward. Typical baits for drop shots are usually four inches or less as small baits tend to work best.

Dry Fly - This is a fly that is capable of floating along the water surface by way of hackle fibers, or feather fibers. An angler that employs this technique is doing what is known as dry fly fishing.
