Whether you are looking for an urban hike or a quiet walk in the woods, there are plenty of unique places to go walking or hiking in San Francisco that are sure to please you. Here are some of our favorite places to go walking in San Francisco.
The Walk: The Golden Gate Bridge
The Difficulty: Completely Flat
The Description: The Golden Gate Bridge is so pretty and incredible that you can sit and stare at it all day long, but why not go walking on it? Until you actually go and take a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge, you cannot really say that you know what this incredible bridge is really all about. At the mid span of the bridge you will be standing 220 feet over the surface of the water, and the ships passing below you will appear as toy boats. The distance from vista to vista is 1.7 miles, but even a little hike is going to give you a real feel for this structure. The bridge can be really windy, more so than the inland area itself, so make sure that you dress in layers and that everything is secure so that nothing is lost into the bay during your walk.
Parking in the south vista area can be pricey and limited, and this may tempt you to rush yourself rather than really getting a chance to explore everything that the Golden Gate Bridge has to offer you. Try to find parking nearby and just take the little walk to get to the bridge, it will be well worthwhile in the end when you get a much greater chance to explore everything that this incredible structure has to offer you.
The Walk: Hyde Street
The Difficulty: Pretty Steep
The Description: This is another really interesting urban style hike, but this one comes equipped with a really steep climb. If you are a photographer, then this is an especially nice hike. You should begin near Ghirardelli Square where the cable car turnaround is. Follow the line for the cable car up the hill while you are on Hyde Street. When you get to Lombard Street, stop and watch all of the craziness on what is known as the crookedest street. Then you can return the way that you came, or you can walk all the way down Lombard until you reach the North Beach, where you could do the Telegraph Hill walk that we mentioned earlier for a unique and truly enjoyable challenge.
San Francisco is certainly known for providing some truly stunning views, and with this, there are plenty of interesting walks and hikes that you can take advantage of. Pick up a tour guide on walking and hiking in San Francisco and you are bound to find some truly interesting gems.
