Review: The Barefoot Fisherman: A Fishing Book for Kids by Paul Amdahl

This book is designed to cater to grades four through six, and specifically children who are already familiar with the basics associated with fishing but that want to learn more about this unique recreational sport. This book covers a wide variety of different topics on fishing for children, including approaching the water, the necessary equipment, what tackle is needed, how to succeed at bait fishing, specific types of fish that you can catch, learning how to tie a fly, and a whole lot more. This book speaks directly toward children reading rather than being written for an adult who is teaching children. It is designed to pass on numerous bits of information and tips that were gathered throughout years of fishing experience on the author's part.

The author of this book has a friendly and unique way of reaching out to kids when it comes to teaching them to fish. He talks about the information that children fishermen find the most pertinent, like the favorite foods of fish that they can catch rather than the best way to bait them. For example, he writes about the sunfish and its favorite food, the tomato worm, which can be found in a parent's tomato plants. He also talks about how it is not vital that every caught fish be kept, and talks about how it is important not to harm the fish when releasing it. The author of this book clearly believes that the enjoyment gleaned from catching fish comes from the skill it took to make the catch, not the dead body of the fish, which is an excellent consideration for children to learn early on.

Many children go fishing when they're young, because their parents were interested and wanted to bring them along. Unfortunately, most children do not get the instruction that they require to learn how to fish properly, so they find themselves lacking a decent understanding of the process until they are adults and want to learn for real. This book changes things up by giving children a way to learn about fishing when they're young. Parents can pick this book up for their kids, and have them feeling knowledgeable and more excited than ever about fishing by the weekend, just in time for a nice family fishing trip.

Most books that are trying to teach kids how to do things are tricky and difficult, especially when it comes to providing the necessary balance between depth and breadth, but this book covers a lot of ground proficiently and quickly, giving kids what they need to know in a format that is easy to follow and extremely informative.
