Sailing Smart By Buddy Melges, Charles Mason with illustrations by Ted Brennan

If you have ever thought about sailing, this is a book that you absolutely must read before ever setting foot on a lake. You’ll learn everything there ever was to know about sailing techniques as well as plenty of other useful information that may keep you safe out on the lake. For the intrepid sailor, this is a great book to refresh the basics and the illustrations make it well worth the time spent reading it.

Sailing is much more than something fun to do on the weekends. There is rich history and culture that revolves around this sport, and you may be surprised at just how deep this culture goes. The first part of the book goes into detail on every aspect of the sailing life and what you can expect. It was nice to get a fun little history lesson and it really sets the tone for the rest of the book.

From there you will learn about how to prepare yourself for sailing, before you even get in a sail boat. From exercises to keep fit, to exercises that will train your eye (the most important feature of any sailor) this section is incredibly valuable. Once you’ve got this mastered, you can move on to preparing to actually sail. The book offers advice on everything from picking out your own boat, to how the controls work and how to handle it out on the water.

The chapter on reading the elements is vital and should be read at least twice. You’ll learn how to handle the wind, what the different kinds of clouds mean and how to handle your boat when approaching land. Although the book is written with the competitive sailor in mind, it is useful for anyone from hobbyists to pros. You can learn volumes from this one book, even if you never plan to enter a single sailing race.

Overall, we can’t say enough nice things about this book. If you love sailing, you will be able to find at least one thing to like about this book, and probably way more than that. Everyone can learn something in here and it is highly recommended for new sailors. It’s tough to find books that cover absolutely everything you need to know and do it in a way that makes it fun to learn. However, this book managed to do all of that and much more.

This is the perfect gift for someone that owns a boat or has always wanted to own one, and you can’t beat the tips and tricks contained herein. Well worth the money and one of the more enjoyable reads that we have ever come across. It deserves a spot on any sailor’s bookshelf and it is a book that you’ll want to return to again and again. Buy an extra copy to keep on hand for extra tips when you’re out on the water.
