San Bruno Mountain State and County Park

  • Location: This hike is located in San Mateo County in the San Bruno Mountain State and County Park.
  • The Hike: This is an all access 1.2 mile loop hike that travels through coastal scrub.
  • Distance: This trail is 1.2 miles in total from the beginning to end and back again.
  • Category and Difficulty: This is a very easy 1.2 mile loop hike that is nearly completely flat.
  • Exposure: There is a mixture of exposed areas where there is plenty of sun as well as shady areas.
  • Traffic: The amount of traffic experienced on this trail is moderate.
  • Trail Surface: This hike is composed of a mix of paved trail and dirt trail surfaces.
  • Walk Time: You can easily walk this hike within one hour or less.
  • Season: This is a trail that is nice during any time in the year.
  • Trailhead Coordinates: This trail is located at 37°41'48.83"N // 122°26'2.25"W

Amenities: There are no accommodations for camping here at the trail. You can find gas, restaurants and stores nearby on Mission and Bayshore.

Rules: Bikes are permitted on some of the trails running through here. The rest of the trails are shared by horses and hikers. Keep in mind that other animals like dogs are not allowed here.

Fees: There is a $5 entrance fee to use this trail. If the entrance kiosk is unstaffed, you can use self registration.

Map: A good map for getting to this region is the AAA San Francisco Bay Region map. There is also a book worth picking up, Afoot and Afield: San Francisco Bay by David Weintraub that provides an excellent map and information about the area.

Accommodations: Parking is free once you have paid the entrance fee for the park, and there are a total of three designated spots for handicapped parking and plenty of additional parking as well. There are restrooms located near the area to the north of the parking area where the picnic area is located. At the entrance kiosk you can obtain a map, and there is a payphone in the parking lot.

Public Transportation: There is no direct transportation leading to this trailhead.

How to Get There: From the United States Highway 101, exit 429-B at Third Street and Cow Palace. Drive toward the south on Bayshore until you reach the Guadalupe Canyon Parkway junction. Take a right and then drive uphill for approximately 2 miles until you reach the park entrance which is located on the right side of the street. If you are coming from Interstate 280 from San Mateo County, take exit 50 at Mission Street. Take Market until you reach Guadalupe Canyon Parkway and then drive east until you reach the park entrance which will be on the left side of the street.
