Waterfall Loop at the Big Basin Redwoods

  • The Hike: This is a strenuous 11 mile loop hike of the Santa Cruz County Hike of the Waterfall Loop at the Big Basin Redwoods Park.
  • Distance: The total distance for this out and back loop hike is 11 miles.
  • Category and Difficulty: This is a strenuous 11 mile loop hike that offers constant and considerable levels of elevation change with a total elevation change of approximately 2000 feet.
  • Exposure: This trail is mostly covered by shade, meaning that it is an excellent hike during the summer months.
  • Traffic: Around the park headquarters, this trail is especially busy, but the trail traffic is otherwise moderate.
  • Trail Surface: Most of the trails are dirt, although there is a steep and short scramble that goes downhill over steps made from rock when you reach Silver Falls.
  • Walk Time: The average walk time for this hike is approximately 6 hours although it can vary based on your skill. Some hike it in 4 hours while others allow the hike to last all day.
  • Season: This hike is a great one to try all year long, but the waterfalls are best during the spring and the late winter.
  • Trailhead Coordinates: This trail is located at 37°10'19.17"N Latitude // 122°13'20.41"W Longitude.

Amenities: Some food options are available in the area of the park, including a snack bar that is seasonal in nature. There are more options that are available in the nearby Boulder Creek, which is also where you are going to want to go for gassing up. There are campgrounds, cabins and backpack camps available at Big Basin.

Rules: Most of the trails are open only to hikers as well as equestrians. Bikes are typically only permitted on the fire roads. Some of the trails are designated only for hiking. Dogs are not permitted on the trails at all.

Fees: The day use fee is $7, and if you want a park map you have to pay $3 for one. Parking is free if you pay the day use fee.

How to Get There: From the I 280 coming from Santa Clara County, take the CA 85 South Exit and continue for 4.5 miles before taking exit #14 onto Saratoga Avenue. Drive toward the west until you reach Saratoga and the Saratoga and Sunnyvale junction and then continue straight when you reach Big Basin Way or CA 9. Drive uphill for approximately 6 miles until you reach the Saratoga gap intersection, then continue straight on the CA 9 until you reach CA 236, turning right. Proceed on this road, which is narrow and winding until you reach the parking lots on the right and the headquarters for the park on the left.
