Boating is definitely allowed when visiting Starkweather Lake, however many guides will advise against boating because there is plenty of fishing that can be enjoyed without.

There is a boat ramp that allows access to the lake, however most fisherman visiting Starkweather Lake forgo the use of boats while enjoying a great deal of their fishing activities because the water is thin in most places, and the fish are easily spooked.

Is camping allowed?

There are a number of different destinations for camping around the Starkweather lake area, some of which are intended specifically to visitors to the lake, and others which are intended for hikers and other travelers who are using the many hiking travels that twist and curve around the lake.

The altitude for Starkweather Lake is 7979 feet or 2432 meters above sea level. While boating is allowed, the most popular form of fishing in this particular lake is fly fishing or angling, and you can do it in the thinner parts of the water without much need for a boat. You should plan on doing some serious walking down along the river because the fish can become easily spooked, so this particular fishing excursion will involve a bit of a field trip. Before boating or fishing in Starkweather Lake, it would be wise to consult with local guides and resources before you head out. The experiences here are vastly different from one season to the next, and while fishing is good in the summer and autumn months, it is better to come prepared than to show up and find that the fish are not biting.

Some of the more popular fish that you will find in the area include the Kokanee Salmon, Rainbow trout, Brook trout, King Salmon, Black Bass and Crappie. Smaller fish tend to hide beneath rocks and in reeds. Many of these fish are commonly found in thinner waters, but they are easily startled and can retreat to deeper waters if threatened. Many holes that were once deep are now much smaller, and the smaller fish are tucking themselves along the side of the river in the branches and other brush.
