Boating is definitely allowed when visiting Starkweather Lake, however many guides will advise against boating because there is plenty of fishing that can be enjoyed without.

There is a boat ramp that allows access to the lake, however most fisherman visiting Starkweather Lake forgo the use of boats while enjoying a great deal of their fishing activities because the water is thin in most places, and the fish are easily spooked.

While boating is allowed, the most popular form of fishing in this particular lake is fly fishing or angling, and you can do it in the thinner parts of the water without much need for a boat. You should plan on doing some serious walking down along the river because the fish can become easily spooked, so this particular fishing excursion will involve a bit of a field trip. Before boating or fishing in Starkweather Lake, it would be wise to consult with local guides and resources before you head out. The experiences here are vastly different from one season to the next, and while fishing is good in the summer and autumn months, it is better to come prepared than to show up and find that the fish are not biting.

Many holes that were once deep are now much smaller, and the smaller fish are tucking themselves along the side of the river in the branches and other brush.
