Stream Techniques

flyfishingIn streams, wild trout generally find their food, their shelter and the right temperatures behind rocks as well as in or near currents and under banks or around logs. You should be moving quietly and casting from downstream as trout will generally be facing up current and they will have a blind spot downstream that you can use in order to approach until you are within easy casting range. Make sure that you are wearing Polaroid glasses so that you can see the trout before the trout happen to see you. Another good way for you to hide from the vision of the trout is to wear clothing that blends in well with the stream side foliage.

You should fish during the dawn hours in the summer months and fall months to find brown trout, which are often feeding during the night. Where the water temperatures are at the lower avoidance levels, you should be fishing in the afternoon because this is when the streams and the lakes are at their warmest point. The exception is going to be streams where the melting snow is muddying the water during the afternoon. These waters are going to best suit the bait fishermen that are doing their fishing during the morning hours. Instead, the best time for fly fishing throughout most of the year is going to be dusk.

Since the stream trout do not usually move far, the easy to reach fish in the more obvious spots are going to get skimmed off early on, and the heavily fished large pools are going to produce mostly trout that have been planted. Undercut banks, side channels and tiny slack water areas behind smaller rocks are going to attract a lot less attention. These are spots are going to hold fish that are best taken using small lures, bait or fly.

You should fish brushy banks and under cut banks from just upstream by slowly paying out a small plug, a spinner, a fly or a bait downstream. Here is a tip: Submerge the tip of your rod in order to avoid catching the line on any branches.

There are a number of lure and bait choices that are going to depend on the season and the depth, the temperature and the clarity of the water. Tiny spinners and medium sized spinners are excellent for shallow rivers and brooks. Spoons as well as small plugs are going to work in areas that are larger or deeper. If the streams are colder than 45 degrees Fahrenheit then you should be using bait. The same is true if the underwater visibility has shrunk down to less than 12 inches.

While the salmon eggs take spring or stocked fish, red worms are best for producing when the streams are currently off color. Natural baits are going to work well near their home water as well as in their home water. Prime natural baits include cased caddis, crayfish tails and hellgrammites.

Keep in mind: Hatchery trout are going to be different in comparison to wild fish, and they are most easily taken using bait or small lures in well known and easily accessible points. For example, you are never going to need to hide from hatchery trout because they naturally associate people with receiving food. Carry grave and toss it into the water, tricking the fish into think it is chow time and they will hit practically anything.
