Lake Arlington is suffering a fate that many lakes and reservoirs have experienced thanks to rising temperatures and diminishing rainfalls, the water level has dropped below the level safe for boater use. November 3rd, city will close the boat ramps to the lake. The ramps at Bowman Springs, Eugene McCray and Richard Simpson parks will close until further notice, thanks to rainfall that is nine inches below the normal amount. The ramps will reopen once the water has reached 542.5 feet, a full 18 inches up from projected levels.

Despite this closure, lake fishing and paddling will remain available, and lakeside parks will open as normal. Lake passes for the trail will be available at the Richard Simpson Park. Signs will be posted to remind lake goers that the ramps will remain closed. The ramps have closed for the safety of the Lake Arlington visitors, as the ramps become unsafe at such low water levels.

The pools water level will typically fluctuate 12 feet from 550 feet. Nearly 2000 acres of surface area adorn the lake, as fishing and boating activities are joined by other fun activities, such as water skiing, jet skiing and other such activities. Fishermen will find excellent levels of largemouth bass and channel catfish populations in the lake. There are also good levels of white bass and crappie. Fishing rules and guidelines follow Arkansas statewide fishing guidelines. Winter will be the best time to catch largemouth bass, while late spring and early summer are the best times for hybrid stripped bass.

What affects the water level in the lake?

Direct precipitation, such as rain on the lake surface, raises the water directly. What really contributes to the water level is the watershed and ground water runoff. Under the ground, there is a level of water that flows, fed by precipitation landing upon ground.

According to officials with the city, despite people wanting to get into the lakes right now, the water level is just really not safe. Public entry using boat ramps is unsafe, especially when the water levels are as low as they are right now. The boat ramps are simply not going to reopen until the water level has risen, and right now there is no determination how long it is going to be until the water level rises, because Arlington is still hoping to receive more rain for this year, despite inadequate rainfall totals in the past months.

Right now the boat ramps at the following lakes have been closed "until further notice":

- Richard Simpson Park
- Bowman Springs Park
- Eugene McCray Park

More lakes in Arlington and elsewhere in Texas may be experiencing the same issues in upcoming weeks. While some parts of Texas have received adequate rainfall for the year already, including Austin and Houston for example, there are numerous cities throughout Texas that are still feeling the consequences of drought months over the past few years.
