Jim Balsiger, acting assistant administrator of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service says in an understatement, "This is a bleak year." Federal officials at a Thursday news conference officially called the West Coast ocean salmon fishery a failure. This move paves the way for congress to appropriate economic disaster assistance for the coastal communities whose members are affected by the closure...

It is estimated that there will be 22 million dollars in direct revenue losses from this year's catch. The ancillary effect to the might to direct support systems of the fishery (bait shops, marinas, fuel docks, processors, sport fishing, and other related businesses) will be 60 million... The governors of Washington, Oregon, and California estimate the combined effect to the economy in all three state at 290 million. Members of congress from these states are attempting to add on an aid package to an upcoming supplemental war funding bill...

No more than 60,000 spawning salmon are expected to return to the Sacramento river system this fall... A minimum of 188,000 is need to sustain a healthy population... and when you compare the 60,000 to the 775,000 that returned in 2002 it becomes crystal clear how large the problem we have on our hands. This makes the 2nd year of the last 3 that the salmon fishery has been declared a failure (less than the minimum 188,000 required returning spawning fish.)

What can we do? Get our act together... Stop pumping too much water out of the delta system, clean up the water quality, and only eat sustainable harvested fish... Our oceans are showing signs of fatigue... We can only feed 70% of the world population based on land food production... If we don't take care of the oceans now it may be to late... By some estimates all ocean fisheries will be depleted by 2047...

One fish that is being sustainable farmed is the Kona Kampachi... I can attest the Kompachi is delicious and eating it will not harm our oceans... Say no to long liners (swordfish, some tuna, and more) their by dead wasted by-catch is 4 times their haul in commercial fish...

Here is another article on Federal agency declares West Coast salmon fishery a disaster by the associated press.
