You can learn a lot from a book, but in many cases, you can learn even more from a DVD, especially if it is a good one. We had some high hopes for this DVD from Rick Huckstepp and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the information it contained.

Rick has a great way of breaking everything down, step by step, so that even rank beginners can understand it completely. One of the best things about learning from a DVD is that you can easily pause it, go back and review something you may have missed. While you can always turn a page back in a book, sometimes it’s nice to have this ability visually.

For those that do learn visually, this DVD is a godsend that will help them completely break through the learning barrier and get started boating right away. The lessons are broken down into basic areas of learning to make it easier to absorb everything. We highly recommend watching it more than once to get everything down.

The first section deals with the mechanics of boats and what you absolutely need to know before taking one out. This is good information and helps new people understand more about how boats operate. From there, you’ll be learning about the different safety equipment you’ll need, how to put it on and how to stay safe in any situation. The next section deals with good boating practices and is essential if you’ll be going out on a large lake where you’ll be dealing not only with other boaters, but different elements.

The DVD wraps up with helpful hints as well as the basics of boat handling and we found these sections to be very interesting and useful. You may want to watch this a couple times and if you’ve got a boat with a DVD player, or you have a portable DVD player, bring it along for some on-site pointers.

You really can’t ask for a better learning device for a beginners, but even old pros may find that they can learn a thing or two from this DVD. We recommend it as a necessary “must watch” before any beginner heads out on the water. You’ll be learning so many things that you just can’t from a book, and the lessons are structured so well that the chances of forgetting the information are small.

If you are searching for a gift for a boater on your list, or someone that dreams about someday getting out there and living their dreams on the water, give them this book. It’s priced well and they’ll be learning from one of the best in the business. We recommend this DVD without reservations and think that it will do a lot of good in helping new people gain a better appreciation of this sport.
