Lake Tahoe offers plenty of exceptional scenery making it worth the fishing trip price just to see the dawn as it tints the Sierras in lovely gold. Fishing is not very productive here since the lake tends to be too pure and clear for supporting a large population worth of fish. It does shelter some decent Mackinaw or lake trout averaging four pounds but running as high as 20. More plentiful Kokanee can average between 12 in. and 15 in. in length. You will also find rainbow trout and brown trout here, averaging around a lb a piece with small planters being most common and three or four pound spawners being taken off shoreline areas and reek mouths.

Party boats generally leave out of Kings Beach, Tahoe City, Homewood and also South Lake Tahoe. There are guided trips which end to be the best way for you to learn about the lake. If you have to go out on your own, stick to the reef areas off of Tahoe City.

Fishing for Mackinaw

Lake trout, also known as Mackinaw or Macs are typically caught using plugs that are being trolled using downriggers, lead core or wire lines from ledges that are 100 to 300 feet in depth in Lake Tahoe. This is a fairly high tech method of catching lake trout, and so it is generally a good idea for you to try a party boat. When you troll on your own, you may end up losing a lot of wire line and terminal gear as a result of nasty ledges. If you absolutely have to, choose a windless day and jig heavy spoons.

Depth finders as well as cross bearings are going to help you locate and then return to the more productive spots. Three trolling runs or drifts at each of the locations is generally plenty, and move if you are not catching fish. If you do catch a fish, then try that same ledge again. These Mackinaw generally tend to bunch up along with big fish in groups of two or three or even four to create spawning pods. Small Mackinaw will typically school. The trolling direction is something that can be quite critical, so make sure that you are circling the spot and trying again to turn luck in your favor if you need to.

Jig fishing and bait fishing are going to peak in the winter and the spring out of Tahoe City, especially in the water between 50 feet and 150 feet in depth. Most fishermen will use a medium weight cast with 200 yards worth of 12 or 20 lb test. Lighter tackle is lightly not going to move the bigger Mackinaw up off of the lake bottom.

Heavy spoons are more than capable of taking fish, as well as cod jigs. Drop lures down to the bottom, reel them up about a foot and them pump them with a three or four foot slow action.

Locals are catching Mackinaw using minnows, especially in the shallows between Stateline and Tahoe City along the North shore, as well as along South Tahoe's sandy bottom. You are going to want to catch your own, which is something that you can do along shallow and rocky areas using a wire mesh trap for minnows along with a can of dog foot that has holes punched in it so that the smell can escape. Make sure that you are only using local minnows because all other minnows are illegal here.

Boat Fishing: Brown and Rainbow Trout

In the spring season and the fall, if you stay close to the pier lines or the shore and you troll as fast as you possibly can, then you can probably take up a nice haul of trout. You should be using a spoon or a between 3 and 4 inch minnow plug with a brown trout finish or a rainbow trout finish using between 4 lb and 6 lb test line. In areas where extremely steep banks are present, you may need to scratch the rock in shore using the tip of your rod. The reason for this is the extremely steep nature of the Tahoe shore which occasionally drops off to more than 200 feet, and trout know that the food is in the shallower waters.

Because the lake is relatively sterile, the best place for fishing is generally going to be near the streams where food is washed into the lake, and the shallows where the algae is present and broadening the food chain significantly. Make sure to check out the regulations as some streams have a setback of 200 yards until they are opened up again in the summer.

Plugs for shallow running and heavy spoons tend to be best indicated for spring and fall seasons when it is possible to troll or to anchor off of the mouths of the streams, casting your lures there. Bait fishing tends to be more productive in the winter months and the summer months which is when the deep running plugs and the depth finders help make it possible to find the trout that you seek.

Experts tend to agree that fishing in Lake Tahoe is always going to be better before the sun hits the water rather than after, as well as on days that are naturally cloudy or overcast. During the spring, pollen tends to be concentrated on the surface as a result of the winds, and the rainbows are generally feeding just below these pollen rafts.

Great Spots: Try checking out Tahoe City, Sand Point Recreation Area, Dollar Point and the Emerald Bay entrance.

Kokanee

Most people are in agreement that the best place for Kokanee fishing in Tahoe is off of South Tahoe, especially along the beaches. When you are here, the bait is going to work best over the sandy bottoms, and trollers are generally fishing at between 50 feet and 75 feet using flashers with corn, worms, spoons and wedding-ring style rigs. The results and the methods are going to change based on the wind and the weather, so it is important for you to speak to someone at a local tackle shop to gain more information.

Locals tend to claim better Kokanee results when they visit Stampede, Donner Lake and Boca Reservoirs, as well as some lakes such as Bullards Bar, New Melones and Comanche. Some people feel that Tahoe Kokanee fishing is only going to improve as the clarity of the water declines as a result of algae growth which is responsible for broadening the base of the food chain in the area.

You should try the mouth of the Emerald Bay, near the feeder creeks and the inlet for the river as well as over the sand bottom which is just a bit offshore from the beach when you reach South Tahoe. It might be a good idea for you to begin with a guided fishing day that is booked through a fishing guide in the local area.

Shore Fishing in Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Tributaries tend to open up later than the normal stream trout opener for California so make sure that you are checking out local regulations for the stream that you are interested in.

All of the tributaries are going to have closed areas of 200 yards at their mouths in order to protect the spawning browns and rainbows, which occurs between October 1 and June 30. Locals tend to fish with baits, including minnows, crayfish tails and night crawlers, and they may also use lures like small copper spinners, black spoons, silver spoons and streamer flies. You should be fishing as close as possible to these setback lines from the fall to the spring. Locals tend to catch big spawners during the first week after opening and then again just before closing in the fall.

Smaller streams, lake chains and tiny brooks that feed the lakes are capable of being outstanding during the month of July. Try to use a cautious upstream approach using a tiny spinner on smaller test line.

The morning following a big storm, you should fish on the downwind side of the lake using crayfish finished plugs, crayfish tails and copper spoons. Cast just barely offshore in about two feet to five feet worth of water.

Anderson: Good bass catches in this lake. Expect to find good bites in deep water using jigging. If looking in mud lines, go for a medium depth using spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Expect that you will catch the occasional trout on your line.

Berryessa: Fishing has slowed somewhat this week with bass and kokanee being the biggest slowdowns. If looking for bass, try some topwater lures. Look deep as well as in weed lines with plastics to get a good response of 1 to 3 pound catches. Expect to find limits of kokanees. Looking to get the best catches will require a depth of 47 to 60 feet.

Calero: Those looking for bass can use drop-shotted plastics as well as spinnerbaits. Minnows, red worms and small jigs work well to catch crappie close to the launch ramp. Expect better catche of crappie than you will find of bass.

Chabot: Those looking for catfish will be able to find some good bites here with the plant this last week. While limits are hard to come by, you can still get some great catches at Honker Bay, Raccoon Point and the docks. Expect to get around 2 to 3 catfish. Those looking for bass will find the bite is getting better.

Chesbro: Use live minnows for night fishing to catch some great catfish. You can also expect to find some decent crappie bites as well.

Coyote: Expect to find good bluegill and crappie catches. The best catch is bass which are being found mostly on the south end. Use swimbaits and jigs for the best bet.

Del Valle: Trout fishing has been poor. Striper bites have been spotty at best with the best catches coming out of the Narrows and Swallow Bay. Those looking for largemouth and smallmouth can find good bites near the East Beach shoreline.

Loch Lomond: While sizes are still small, you can expect to find some good bluegill catches here this week.

Mcalpine: Expect to find great bites on catfish, bluegill and bass. Trout fishing will improve shortly with a plant that goes in on Friday.

Quarry Lakes: With a 500 pound plant of catfish having gone in this last week, expect to find good catches at Fisherman’s Row. Those looking for trout will also be able to get good catches with a 750 pound plant going in this last week as well.

San Pablo Reservoir: Those looking for catfish will be able to find great catches with a 1,000 pound plant that went in on Tuesday. Best catches have been with regular and garlic-scented chicken livers as well as night crawlers. The best bites have come from Sandy Point, Graveyard Cove and Scow Canyon.

Uvas: Do some night fishing to catch catfish. Using cutbaits is your best bet to get bites up to 5 pounds.

Delta fishing has been making many anglers happy with great sturgeon and salmon catches

Benicia: Sturgeon is very active in Ozol. You can also look in the Carquinez Straits during the first part of the outgoing tide as well as at the top of the tide. Look along the shoreline if you want to get some great striper bites. Use bloodworms to get the best results. Salmon has also been biting with the first catches being reported last week.

Rio Vista: There are many stripers on the small side to be caught. Those looking for catfish can get some great bites when looking at Cache Slough, Lindsay Slough and Prospect Slough. You can also use Senkos at Seven Mile Slough to get some good action on black-bass.

Saltwater fishing has been good this week with salmon catches improving

Berkeley: Central Bay has been a hot spot for the Happy Hooker to get 1.5 halibut per rod as well striper limits. Cod has been caught at limits for the Flying Fish at the Farallons. Daily trips for the New Easy Rider have been turning up greater than a fish per rod for those looking for salmon.

Bodega Bay: Trolling has been returning action when set at 40 feet. The biggest catch was reported last week with a catch of 40 pounds.

Capitola: Soquel Point to Mile Reef has been a great spot for those looking for halibut and rock cod. Halibut have been found in 40 to feet of water. Those looking for bait will need to look between Capitola and Santa Cruz as they are on the move.

Emeryville: Salmon catches have been good for boats trolling off of the Marin Coast with catches going up to 30 pounds. Halibut has been a good bite with a fish per angler. Also expect to find striper catches up to 17 pounds when going on live bait potluck trips. Best action has been seen in Central Bay.

Monterey: Rock cod has been coming in at limits recently, but the biggest catches have been with salmon. With catches averaging 10 pounds, boats looking just off the beaches near Fort Ord have been able to catch big numbers.

Pacifica: Striper and perch bite has slowed considerably due to the rough water recently. Mackerel has been a better catch with most running above 12 inches in length. Buckets with more than 40 fish were being pulled in at the pier by those fishing early in the week.

Pillar Point: Look south of the buoys through San Gregorio when looking to catch limits on rock fishing trips.

Santa Cruz: Do not expect to find any halibut when on rock cod trips. You can expect to find sacks of blues, blacks and vermillion. Saturday’s salmon trip last week got five salmon between 8 and 25 pounds for the five anglers on board.

San Francisco: Look on the South Bay piers to find good bites of rays, sharks and jack smelt. If you are looking for halibut or bass, you will be able to find what you are looking for near Alcatraz in the Central Bay no the rock piles.

Lake Fishing

Anderson: Bass sizes have been improving recently with the average sizes going up to around two to three pounds. You can also expect to find some good crappie catches when you fish near the bridge. Those looking to catch bass should use jigs or wacky-rig worms. Look near the bank and up to seven feet

Berryessa: Those looking for bass might find their catches to be spotty at best with many of the males only looking for nibbles after guarding the nest. Trout are biting in shallow water while the kokanee have been found schooling in 40 to 60 foot waters. The topwater bite is a good bet in the morning while the best places to fish include big island, the Narrows and Skiers Cove.

Calero: Expect to find cloudy waters as well as bass which stick to the weeds. Get the best bites by using lures which are weed free. If you go out on a cloudy day, you might consider using spinnerbaits. Otherwise, you might try Senkos and jigs to get the catches you want.

Chabot: Two plants of catfish last week have improved the ability to catch up to ten pounders. You can pull them in using chicken liver, sardines or mackerel as cutbaits. Find them in the coves. If you are looking to catch the planted trout, you will have to look deep using Power Bait.

Chesbro: Late night fishing produces small bluegill. It is also possible to catch catfish.

Coyote: Look near rocks and cover to get a good reaction bite from bluegill and black bass. Expect to find bass up to three pounds. Best bait to use includes jigs and plastics.

Del Valle: Anchovies ate the best bait to get some great bites on stripers this week. Look near Swallow Bay and the Dam to catch your share of the 8 – 10 pounders. Look near the left side of the dam to score some great trout catches. East Bay and near Marina have been producing catfish catches.

Loch Lomond: Best bite this week has come from the bluegills which can be found in shallow areas with sun. While bass bite has been slow, you can still find them in 10 to 15 foot water.

Los Vaqueros: Best catch this week remains to be striper. You can expect to pull in the average of around 9 pounds. There was about 13 caught which were over 13 pounds on Sunday. Additionally a record tipping 29.09 pound catfish was caught using anchovies in between the piers. The lucky angler was Van Pham of San Leandro.

Mcalpine: You can expect to find catfish and bluegill throughout the day. Also expect to find sturgeon in the lake for the first time. Additionally, there are plenty of trout thanks to the plant for the long weekend.

Quarry Lakes: You can expect at least a fish or two when fishing for trout from the peninsula using Power Bait.

San Luis Reservoir: Cutbaits have been a great way to get catches on catfish which have been beating stripers to the bite. Expect to find a lot with flukes. The forebay is the best place to find stripers. Big Lake offers great catfish catches.

San Pablo Reservoir: Those waiting for the catfish plant next week will still be able to find a lot of great fishing with a trout plant going in this week of 1,700 pounds. This will add to the already good trout fishing. Those looking to get catches on the great bass fishing can get what they are looking for with spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and green pumpkin plastic worms. Look between Scow Canyon to rock wall in the shallows. Worm/Power Egg combos have been a great way to catch the trout hanging out between Bobber Beach and Oaks Point.

Uvas: Night fishing has been producing between one and two catfish each rod. Expect for catches to improve as the weather gets warmer.

Delta Fishing

Frank's Tract: Those looking to catch bass might be disappointed with the slow catches. You can find schoolie striped bass taking swimbaits. Black bass have been nibbling on spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. Look near tules to find many of the black bass, but do not expect much as they are cruising instead of schooling.

Rio Vista: Stripers have been the action of the week with trollers getting action whenever they go between Decker Island and Three Mile Slough. If you are a bank angler, you can try your luck between Sandy Beach and Vista Pier. Additional catches have been spotted above Isleton.

Saltwater Fishing

Berkeley: Trips this week have slacked off this week with The New Easy Rider only getting one Salmon on the Tuesday outing. Potluck boats have been faring better with at least a fish per rod. Halibut has been the main catch with a few stripers. A few salmon have been caught by rock cod boats at islands, but most are catching half limits with a few decent sized lings.

Capitola: Rock fishing has been improving with the halibut coming in from Mile Reef being a common catch. Best bait to use is sardines. While no stripers were caught, a couple were lost at the pier.

Monterey: Even though salmon has slacked off a bit, you can expect to find good striper catches during high tides on the beach between Moss Landing and Monterey. Bass between 10 and 20 pounds have been found biting on hairraisers and pencil poppers. Point Sur and local spots have been good for bottom fishing.

Pacifica: Crab season might be over, but that does not mean that you cannot fill up on stripers. Expect good striper catches using pile or blood worms. You can also expect to find some great perch catches. Plug throwers can use hairraisers and bombers to get the best results.

Pillar Point: Martin’s Beach is a common destination for boats looking to get catches. Limits have been caught on rock fishing trips. Mixed cod have only been found after a full day of work.

San Francisco: Those looking for rays and sharks have been having luck at Oyster Point Pier. South Bay has been a hard bite for stripers and halibut has slowed entirely with few even going out.

Suisun Bay: The occasional striped bass of around 24 inches have been caught with Martines Pier and near Ozol being great places to catch larger sizes of sturgeon.

Lake fishing was dominated by trout and catfish this week.

Anderson: Bass fishing is the best bite right now on the lake. The best spots to get the biggest fish are in the shallows. Last week a 9 pound bass was caught, but the majority of catches ranged from 1 – 2 pounds. Expect the best catches with dart-head worms and drop-shotted worms or even jigs. You might even be able to find some good crappie this week.

Berryessa: Expect to find bass, kokanee and kokes as long as you are looking in the right places. The coves are a great place that you will be able to find bass, but expect to find weeds and frogs. Bass are fully awake having snapped from spawn to midsummer mode. Topwater lures are a great way to catch some fish early. Depths for fish include 25 feet for bass and 45 feet for kokanee. You can find all of the kokes you want by trolling the mouth of the coves.

Calero: While catfish might be slower this week, you can expect to get some good bites from bass and crappie. Use jigs to get some 2-3 pound averages. Expect to find bass in tight areas thanks to grass growing in.

Chabot: Near island and Raccoon Point are the best places to fish this week. Look for some decent catches with the first catfish plant of the season going in at 500 pounds. Expect to find decent sized catfish of 6 – 8 pounds. The hot weather has slowed the trout fishing slightly.

Chesbro: While bass might have slowed down a bit, you can still expect good catfish bites if you go in the evening.

Coyote: This week, you can expect a variety catch with catfish, bass and bluegill all biting good. Expect to find bluegill at the dam and Angler’s Cove. You can also look near the dam for crappie while the bass are in the shallow.

Del Valle: The dam is a great place that you will be able to find both trout and stripers. You will also be able to find stripers at Heron Bay. The east end of the lake has been productive in catch and release bass.

Loch Lomond: Look in shallow sunny coves to be able to find bluegills. This is because the water has risen to 73 degrees, but still a bit chilly. Bass have even snapped a few lines this week.

Los Vaqueros: Anchovies are the best bait this week to catch both stripers and catfish. You will also be able to find both catches at Oak Point and Rock Wall. Catches are very active with catfish ranging from 12 to 23 pounds and stripers ranging from 9 to 14 pounds.

Mcalpine: Trout plant is scheduled for this week, so expect better catches soon. Additionally, you can expect continued good bites from bass, trout and bluegill. Chartreuse Power Bait and worms are great for trout. Topwater poppers are best for bass and Power Bait “nibbles” or red worms are best for bluegill.

Parkway: Get ready for the catfish derby coming up on July 16 – 17 with some great fishing. Averages are about 2 – 3 pounds. Get the best bites at night between 8 and midnight. Look at the peninsula and the sand bar for best bites. Anchovies and night crawlers are the best bite with cut chicken livers bringing in some good catches as well.

Quarry Lakes: Trolling has been the best method for catching trout this week as the action has slowed considerably since last week.

San Luis Reservoir: Expect to catch some good catfish this week with catches ranging from 3 – 10 pounds. Get some nibbles using striper bait. Expect less catches of striped bass this week.

San Pablo Reservoir: With a good plant as recent as June 8, trout fishing is remaining good. You can find a lot of great catches whenever you look between Rock Wall, Sandy Point and Scow Canyon. If fishing for the shore, you can expect to find what you are looking for at the main recreation area. Catfish are taking chicken livers and bass can be found in Graveyard Cove in deeper water.

Uvas: Get some great catfish bites at night. You can also get some decent bites from bass and crappie fishing.

Delta fishing has slowed some this week.

Frank's Tract: Expect to find a lot of decent sized fish with many topping 10 pounds. Morning fishing is productive with topwater lures. Throwing frogs and drop-shotting plastics is working great to get some of the spawning bass and stripers.

Rio Vista: Look near Hastings Cut to get crappie. Clams are the best bait to get catfish. With shakers being the best you can hope for, striper has slowed some.

Saltwater fishing has improved this week with the tides calming down.

Berkeley: Rock Cod and Salmon were hitting good this week while the stripers and halibut have dropped off somewhat. The New Easy Rider saw some great catches right off of Muir Beach and Double Point.

Capitola: Stripers and rock cod as well as halibut have improved this week. You can find rock cod whenever looking at Mile Reef. This is the hot spot for many of the shore anglers this well as you will be able to try your luck to best the 10 pound striper.

Emeryville: While salmon and halibut has slowed down, you will be able to find lings and rock cod as well as striper catching good this week.

Monterey: Rock cod has been hitting good this week while salmon has been slowing slightly. Shakers have been the average catch this week

Pacifica: You will not be able to find perch or stripers this week and action on the beach has been slow.

Pillar Point: Rock cod and lings have been productive this week with the Tiger fish going to the islands.

San Francisco: Oyster Point Pier has been productive for striper catches while the wind has been keeping the boats away from South Bay. Boast get the best action during the day time.
