If you are looking for unique hiking opportunities in California, then it would be silly to pass up what the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer you. The myriad of San Francisco Bay Area parks and other preserves can offer you a truly dramatic variety of different landscapes, including some that are truly rugged and lined with canyons and redwood trees and some that are breezy and coastal with gorgeous views. You will also find sunny hills coated with chaparrals, and rolling hills covered in lush grasses. The gentle Mediterranean style climate that the San Francisco Bay Area offers encourages hiking all throughout the year. If you are looking for a truly unique and diverse experience and you enjoy all of the challenges that hiking has to offer, then it would be well worth your time to explore the San Francisco Bay Area and all of the unique hiking opportunities that this vast space has to offer you.

If you are looking for a good destination all throughout the year, regardless of the season or the weather, then you would be hard pressed to find anything better than Mount Tamalpais, which is located in Marin County, which is just north of the San Francisco Bay Area. Another excellent hike can be found at the Ravine-Matt Davis, a loop that provides true splendors all throughout the year with new wildlife popping up every month. In the spring you will find lush carpets full of colorful wildflowers. In the winter time you will find rushing waterfalls. In the summer time you will have difficulty seeing through all of the clouds of gorgeous butterflies. In the evening, the creekbeds have become littered with gorgeous colored maple leaves.

The whole area in the San Francisco Bay Area really does appear to be teeming with flora and fauna, wildlife surrounding you on all sides. Even the parks that sit next to busy and bustling neighborhoods experience surges in wildlife growth. You will see coyotes, tule elk, golden eagles and many other unique species of animals all around you, and they seem unmoved by your presence in their parks. If you want to take in breathtaking views, gorgeous scenery, luscious nature and a variety of species of animals, then the best destination for you to consider for your next hiking excursion is the San Francisco Bay Area. In less than 60 square miles you will find more than 60 unique hiking trails and trailheads. With so many opportunities for adventure, how could you possibly pass it up?

Whether you are looking for a simple walk to enjoy with your dog, a family camping outing or a little surprise adventure with a loved one - There are plenty of unique hiking opportunities that only the San Francisco Bay Area could possibly offer you.

Berryessa: You can find scattered fish at the Narrows and Skier’s Cove. Trout have been found at 25 feet using small bass fry. Kokanee are currently being found in deeper water down to 45 and 55 feet.

Chabot: Bass have been found near Raccoon Point and at Bass Cove. Trout have been spotted at Coots Landing, the Burner and at Raccoon Point. Shore and boat anglers have been able to catch limits even though sizes have been small. Fishing for bass has improved. Catfish Plant to come soon.

Contra Loma: Crappie can be caught using worms or jigs. Best place to find them is at Loma Island or Channel Point along the shore. Catching black bass is easy after the recent spawn. Trout are easily caught near the Boat Ramp using Power Bait or night crawlers. Good sized catfish of 5 to 10 pounds have been caught all over the lake using chicken liver and night crawlers.

Del Valle: Bass have been biting on Rapalas and Senkos when you fish at the tules at the Narrows and near the south end of East Beach. Trollers have found some luck near the dam. East Beach has been the most productive spot for shore anglers. All in all fishing has been slow here.

Lafayette: Night Crawlers and Power Bait are good to use in the south end of the lake to get the best bites. Water temperature is up seven degrees in the recent week and there looks to still be one to two fish plants coming in the next few weeks.

Los Vaqueros: Anchovies have been producing the biggest striped bass bite this week with the largest being at 14.2 pounds and others weighing in at 10 – 13 pounds. Fishing from the bank has been producing many of the best results so far.

Mount Tamalpais Lakes: 1,000 pounds of trout have been planted in both Lagunitas and Bon Tempe this last week.

Quarry Lakes: Mixed results this week using broken-back Rapalas when trolling near the pier and at the back side of the peninsula. Trout has been the main catch for those who are trolling this week.

San Luis Reservoir: Stripers have been slow to bite this last week for anglers. The better results have been for those using trolling. Best methods to catch the fish include using bloodworms and jumbo minnows in the forebay. Catfish are not biting.

San Pablo Reservoir: Bass fishing has been less than stellar this last week. The main catch has been from trout. Trollers have been catching more of the big fish. Best points for fishing include the Oaks, the Pines and the Main Recreation Area.

Shadow Cliffs: Trout bite has been very slow due to hot temperatures sending the trout deep.

Less productive fishing along the rivers this week.

Napa: Low tides have resulted in muddy water at the bottom with clearer water at the top. Stripers are small with the best size being around the 24 inch size. Smaller sturgeon have been smaller even though they are still being caught in decent numbers.

Russian: Shad fishing is all but over with summer dam at Johnson’s Beach going in and Tuesday and vacation Beach following soon.

Delta fishing has improved some, but stripers seem to be the catch of the week.

Antioch: Whiskey Slough and False River are the best bet for those looking to catch catfish. Those looking to find stripers can find schoolie sizes at False River and Sherman Lake. Frank’s Tract has been showing results for Crappie.

Benicia: Glomar is the hot spot this week. The Horseshoe and Garnet Point have been great locations to catch large sturgeon and a few good shakers when going with the outgoing tide. You can also look from Big Cut to Mothball Fleet to get some of the best sturgeon fishing.

Franks Tract: Minnows are a great way to catch the scattered bass which are available. Finding baitfish has been more difficult with the weeds being sprayed.

Freeport: Striped bass has been improving with some catches getting up to ten pounds. Females have been caught recently to increase the sizes. Pile worms and sardines have been productive when fishing along the edges to get the striped bass you are looking for.

Pittsburg: With the biggest fish getting to be about 25 inches, you will be able to find stripers. Sturgeon can be found around Little Cut, Big Cut, buoy 31 and buoy 33.

Rio Vista: Sandy Beach, Cache Slough and Liberty Island have been showing some catfish bites. Shakers are the heaviest bite for stripers even though these are the majority of what is getting caught.

Tracy: Anchovies have been pulling in trout-sized stripers and good sized catfish near the shore on Grand Line Canal.

Salt WATER

Berkeley: Salmon between 10 to 22 pounds as well as halibut and seven bass have been caught in a couple of potluck trips.

Bodega Bay: Shallow water salmon is possible due to the anchovies moving in to shallow water for the first time in years. The New Sea Angler saw good results at Timber Cove with catches being in the range of 25 limits of rock cod, 19 lings weighing in up to 12 pounds. The Rock fishing is better than ever right now.

Emeryville: After the first two outings with 40 fisherman catching 190 rock fish and 39 lings, the boats have not returned to the water. This marks the opening of Rock Cod. 13 anglers on the New Huck Finn also caught two stripers, and eight halibut.

Pillar Point: Mixed results have been happening between the Tigerfish and the Queen of Hearts. Good catches came from the south of the harbor and close to Martin’s Beach.

San Francisco: Fishing time has been shortened with tides in the early morning and afternoon winds.

San Pablo Bay: While halibut have cleared out during the minus tides and stripers have slowed, there have still been great sturgeon bites. North of Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is the best as long as you are not near other boats.

Lakes and Saltwater

Berryessa: If you are trying to pick up some good bass this week, head to this location. Small Mouth Bass are being picked up easily by those who are getting only 10 feet or less into the water. Use plastics if you want to pick up the best. If you are looking for Largemouth, you are going to want to get deep into the cover at Berryessa. You may also find some in the north end of the lake.

Camanche: The south shore pond has been a great location for those who are looking to pick up some trout. The main lake has also been a good location, making this a strong fishing location throughout.

Chabot: There are some trout that are being caught but none of them are of a size that is worth bragging about.

Contra Loma: Head to the Channel Point Dock and to the Boat Ramp if you want to pick up some good trout in this location this week. Power Bait has been giving people the greatest amount of success at this location.

Del Valle: Someone managed to pick up a 13-pound trout over the last week, making this a strong location. Head to the East Beach and use night crawlers for a good bite. You may find some crappie if that is what you are looking for.

Lafayette: There were some fish that were put into the lake over the last week. People have been finding the most success at both the east cove and the couth cove of the lake.

Los Vaqueros: If you are looking for a wide variety, head to this location. People are managing to pull in catfish, trout, and bass. Some have managed to pick up over 20 pound catfish in the area.

Mount Tamalpais Lakes: All of the lakes in the area were given a fresh plant of trout. Bon Tempe managed 1,000 pounds of smaller fish, while Lake Lagunitas managed 500 pounds of larger fish. Both locations should be strong for fishing over the next few weeks.

Pacifica: Crabbing has been poor at best because of the tsunami waves that came into the area. This may pick up soon but should be slow for quite some time.

Pardee: Head to the river arm if you are trying to pick up some trout. Some kokanee are being picked up in the area, as are some rainbows. You are going to want to use Nightcrawlers to get the best bite possible.

Quarry Lakes: This has been a somewhat solid location for fishing, especially for those who are looking for trout. You are going to want to use Power Worms or Power Eggs if you are heading to this location.

San Francisco: You are going to be able to find some smelt close to the shore, as well as rays. The area is still waiting for some halibut, but so far there has been none.

San Pablo Bay: There are some schoolie striped bass, especially for those who are on the top of the tide. Head toward the pump house for the best bite available.

San Pablo Reservoir: If you are fishing on the shore you are going to be able to pick something up. People have been managing limits from the shore. Boaters are not going to fare as well, but will do ok at Bobber Beach and Sandy Point.

Shadow Cliffs: Some people have been managing to pick up some trout in the area, making this a popular location for the week. Head to the third dock if you want the best fish in the lake.

Rivers and Deltas

Antioch: You may be able to pick up some striped bass in the area, as some have pulled in 30 inches or near that size. Head to Collinsville if you want to pick up some sturgeon.

Benicia: Head upriver if you are trying to pick up some good sturgeon. Head to the mothball fleet or the grizzly bay.

Frank’s Tract: You are going to be able to find black bass here this week, as the bite has been strong. Use crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Stripes are coming in, and are biting to those who offer shad.

Freeport: This was a strong location until the recent weather, with the rain causing some issues. You should head to this location again, once the rain stops, if you are looking to find some sturgeon.

Napa: Head south of the highway 29 bridge if you want to pick up some Sturgeon. Those who are using Eel are picking up the best fish in the river. Someone in the area has managed to pick up a 38 pound striper.

Pittsburg: This has been a weak location, with no one managing to pick up stripers and few managing to pick up sturgeon. Most are shore anglers.

Rio Vista: If you are going to troll, you are going to find some striped bass. Simply head below Rio Vista. You will be able to find some sturgeon but the bite has slowed considerably.

Russian: You are going to want to avoid this river at all costs. It is completely blown out wit no end in sight, as rain continues to hit the area.
