Prospects are good for all fish all around, but knowing where to find the right bite is the best way to get the most out of your fishing endeavor. Here is a look at what's biting, and more importantly, where.

Lake Fishing:

Bass: In the early and late hours you can find a good top water bass bite at Camanche. Plastics have been relatively productive here as well. The bass bite is particularly light at Clear Lake because the water temperatures are climbing to the 80s, but if you're here looking for Bass this week, try drop shotting Senkos or plastics. There is a fair striped bass bite at Del Valle. Trolling around Howden Cove at Los Vaqueros will bring about a decent haul of striped bass. On the other end of the spectrum, bass fishing has slowed at San Pablo and New Melones.

Catfish: In the Camanche you will find good catfish prospects. Catfish prospects are also especially good at the Chabot, especially in the morning and the evening, but the evening bite is definitely the better out of the two options. If you are down by Contra Loma, you will find that the catfish are taking chicken livers and night crawlers, especially around the Channel point dock. The best bite that you are going to find here is occurring in the early half of the morning, with most fish ranging from 1 lb to 2. You will also find catfish at Del Valle as well as Lafayette, one of the two more common targets as of late.

Catfish are not yet very active in the San Pablo Reservoir and it is unknown whether or not they will begin to show themselves soon. There are plenty of catfish to behold at Shadow Cliffs, however, as 500 lb plants are going in every week. Weekly catfish plants are also going in every week at Quarry Lakes with around 500 to 750 lbs going in every week, but the pressure has been light so the catch rates have been relatively low so far.

Trout: The trout bite has bee relatively slow in many places, including Del Valle this week. On the other hand, trout fishing has been fair between the South Cove and the Rock Wall at Los Vaqueros. At the San Pablo Reservoir you will find a few trout, but the bite has slowed significantly in the past week or so.

Panfish: The panfish are coming out in full force, especially at Del Valle and Lafayette where they are becoming some of the more common catches.

Lakes to Avoid this Week: Trinity and Lewiston are suffering from warm weather and low water levels, keeping people away from these lakes for the most part. Trinity has been virtually empty and Lewiston has been relatively quiet.

River Fishing:

Shad: Shad are still being caught in the American, especially in the upper stretches between Sunrise and Nimbus Dam. Flows are currently high and pressure is relatively light, though. There is a late shad bite below the Diversion Dam in Red Bluff. Fishing is relatively good between Anderson and Red Bluff in the Lower Sacramento area.

Salmon: The salmon fishing is fair between Lewiston and Junction City in the Trinity. The fish here are moving relatively quickly, and so the luck has been rather hit or miss but it's not completely out of the question, especially if you call ahead.

Green Drake: You'll find a green drake hatch at the Truckee, but it may be best to use streamers and fish the deeper holes for success here.

Delta Fishing:

Striped Bass: On the San Joaquin side of the Rio Vista there is still striped bass to be found, but shaker bass are much more likely.

Catfish: Catfish are a popular bet on the Rio Vista, and you are also going to find the catfish to be the most common catch when fishing along the Grant Line Canal in the Tracy area. Fishing pressure has been relatively light all over, though.

Saltwater Fishing:

Berkeley and Emeryville: The pot luck boats at Berkeley have been working on the inside end of the bay looking for striped bass and halibut, and landing a halibut and one to two bass with each trip. On Sunday, the New Easy Rider landed a 34 lb halibut. Top producers for Halibut this week have been Red Rock, Southampton and Paradise, and Halibut have reached 25 lbs here easily with bass reaching 10 lbs.

Albacore trips are going out on the Flying Fish on Friday and Sunday. The Happy Hooker is also out there, working along the Marin county coast to reach out to rock cod limits and plenty of ling cod as well. On Monday there is a planned trip to the surf in search of stripers.

Between Ocean Beach and Santa Cruz County: You are going to find plenty of striped bass. You can catch a lot of live bait here in Pacifica and then turn it around and use it for the bass fishing. Offshore winds near Pillar Point have kept the boats away from the Farralons. Local boats are managing to catch decent numbers of blacks as well as blues, especially on trips up toward Pescadero. The winds this week along the San Francisco bay have kept many anglers away from the southern end of the bay, but shore anglers have been coming out and claiming 25 inch stripers.

San Pablo Bay: is offering big tides this week which have cut down on the halibut fishing considerably, but the tides are supposed to be favorable this week which will change the fishing a bit. The top spot this week is Paradise. It would also do you well to check out Suisun Bay if sturgeon is your catch of choice. Most of the sturgeon that is being landed right now is going to be shakers.

Fishing has been sturdy over the past week, but the key to getting what you want is to know the best place to find it. Here is a look at current lake fishing experiences:

Bass: If you are looking for bass this week, there are a number of worthwhile places to check out. In the early and late hours and equipped with plastic jigs you can find a fair number of bass in the Camanche. The bite is good at Chabot, and a 12.3 pounder was caught off of Aldar Point recently. At Clear, the fishing has slowed somewhat. If you have Senkos, your best bet here may be to drop-shot them from the mid lake area.

Along the narrows of Del Valle, as well as near the dam, you will be able to find a fair selection of striped bass. Another place where bass fishing is going to be worthwhile is New Melones. Bass can also be found near the back of arms at Shasta, especially during the early morning hours. Any later, and the fish will head deeper down.

Catfish: Catfish can be found in the rocky areas of the Camanche. The catfish bite is also good at Chabot. If you visit Contra Loma, bring either chicken livers or night crawlers if you want access to the strong catfish bite, which can be found near to the pool area. The catfish bite is still well worthwhile all over the lake at Lafayette. Los Vaqueros is another good bet, with a 22 lb catfish caught last week. Catfish can also be found near the rockier areas at the San Pablo Reservoir. Catfish prospects have been fair at Shadow Cliffs where 500 stocks are going in every week, but fishing is slowing at Quarry Lakes despite regular plants.

Trout: During the early hours of the morning and in the deeper waters of the Camanche you can still find a fair collection of trout. At Chabot, the trout bite seems to have dropped off, at least temporarily. Trolling around the big island in Davis is a stellar way to attract trout, but fly style fishing has been relatively slow. The trout fishing is luckily still fair around Del Valle, but there are plenty of other fish to find there.

Trout fishing this week has slowed considerably at Lafayette. Visit Los Vaqueros instead, where trout fishing is still good around the south Cove. Another solid place for trout, especially when trolling, is Pardee. San Pablo Reservoir is no longer the best place to catch trout as the summer continues on, but trolling with down riggers may bring about a decent catch. Another example of where trout fishing is slowing is Shadow Cliffs. Quarry Lakes trout fishing has also been slow even though there have been numerous plants. You may find trout around 50 to 60 feet down at Shasta, though.

Kokanee: Easy limits of Kokanee are being taken out of New Melones, especially by trollers near the dam, the spillway and Rose Island. Trolling has also been good in Pardee. For Kokanee here you should be trolling down between 50 feet and 70.

Crappie: A fair crappie catch can be found around Del Valle, along with bluegill and trout, especially around the east beach.

Salmon: Look approximately 90 feet deep around Shasta for a fair salmon catch.

Now, onto delta fishing:

In the sloughs of the Rio Vista you will find plenty of black bass, and the catfish catch is also quite productive. Tracy is offering plenty of striped bass, especially around Grant Line Canal, and the fishing has been fair for both black bass and catfish. If you are looking for crappie, you may just find them here.

Saltwater fishing is offering a completely different mixed bag of results this week. What are you hoping to catch?

In Berkeley and Emeryville, party boats have been drifting off of Bonita Cove, Crissy Field and Alcatraz to average better halibut and striped bass catches than a fish per rod. The El Dorado has been achieving cod limits on all of its trips when traveling outside of the gate, and there has been a good appearance of lings as of late. This last week, the Happy Hooker managed to land a white sea bass that weighed in at 55 lbs.

In the Pacifica area, pier fishing has been particularly good if you are happy with occasional striped bass, sea bass and perch. Surf casters are continuing to have a good bass catch when they begin around Montara or Ocean Beach. The morning bite has been particularly good, so hit the water between 6 o'clock am and 9 o'clock am.

Pillar Point is offering rock cod limits and the occasionally ling, especially for local boats that are working along Pigeon Point. Tuna has been the best catch for private skiffs since around Wednesday.

The San Francisco bay has been offering good fishing this week. If you are looking for Halibut, the best place to go is in the main bay area near Seal Rock and Angel Island. Larger fish that are between 20 lbs and 30 are being found in this area. There are also smaller halibut in the bay, falling into the 10 lb range or so, and these can be found near Candlestick in the South Bay. There are also a few stripers to be had in the southern part of the bay, but in the San Francisco bay this week the focus seems to be largely on the halibut.

Halibut fishing also continues to be rather tremendous in nature at the San Pablo Bay, and here you will also find plenty of striped bass fishing as well. When the tides are right you will find bass near the Brothers, and Halibut just about everywhere else.

Finally, if you're looking for Sturgeon fishing, Suisun Bay is the way to go. The best bites are currently coming from the Martinez Pier, Glomar and Ozol. The best bait for sturgeon right now is going to be grass shrimp, hands down.

Enjoy your week!

Lake fishing prospects have been good this week. In the Camanche, prospects for bass, crappie and catfish have all been good, and if you can get to the deep water you will also find plenty of trout as well. The bass are spending a fair amount of time along the south shore near the cliffs as well as in the narrows. The catfish and crappie on the other hand are especially plentiful along the harbor at the south shore. Trout fishing is slowing down somewhat at Chabot, but you will find plenty of catfish here, especially if you visit in the evening hours.

At Clear Lake you will find bass biting in the middle of the lake, as this is where the fewest number of weeds are currently growing. Pressure has been relatively light at Contra Loma, but fishermen are still pulling out bluegill, catfish and crappie, especially at the fishing dock you'll find at Channel Point as well as near the swimming area. Lafayette's trout bite is especially advantageous in the early morning hours, especially for anglers using the docks on the east shore. The catfish bite continues well into the day, with catfish as large as 20 lbs coming up earlier this last week.

If you are looking for good striped bass fishing, check out Del Valle, where you will find them in the just legal range. There are plentiful numbers of catfish to be found and fished along the south end of the lake, and trout fishing is still especially good if you set off near the dam. On the other end of the spectrum, fishing has been so-so at Los Vaqueros because the conditions have been warm and windy. Trollers have been struggling to find trout, which only seem to surface around the rock wall and South Cove. Prospects for stripers as well as catfish are both good.

For regular bass, catfish and Kokanee biting, check out New Melones. Kokanee can be found in the deeper waters of the main lake. Bass, on the other hand can be found taking top water lures especially during dawn as well as dusk. Catfish can be found around the rockier points. Bait anglers are doing well catching trout at the San Pablo Reservoir. Bass fishing here is also worthwhile, but the bite for catfish has been relatively slow.

The Shadow Cliffs Lake is currently getting plants of 500 lbs worth of catfish every week. You will also find some decent leftovers in the way of bass fishing and trout fishing as well. Fishing has been relatively slow at Quarry Lakes, but the warmer weather and an increase in the stock of catfish have both improved the bite. In celebration of July 4, someone caught a stunning 15 lb catfish.

River fishing has been relatively hit or miss, especially in the American where Folsom's increased water releases have scattered the bass and the shad somewhat. The Feather is experiencing high water and this may have completely ended this year's shad season. You will find some Steelhead here, spreading around below the after bay, but the numbers are not great. The tail end of the salmon run is finally moving through the lower end of the Klamath river.

The best bite at the McCloud river is taking place between the hours of 4 o'clock pm and dusk. Shad fishing is especially good in the lower Sacramento river, especially below the Diversion Dam at Red Bluff.

Hot water has put somewhat of a damper on the trout bite, especially along the Redding area. River flows are stabilizing at Trinity, and now the salmon are beginning to come in. It certainly isn't limit fishing, but it is definitely a solid start to the season. Trout fishing has been especially good at Truckee, as a result of late afternoon hatches and evening hatches, so check out Truckee if you are looking for a good trout bite.

The three places to visit in the Delta are Frank's Tract, Tracy and Rio Vista. Things are relatively slow in Frank's Tract this week, so you will find few anglers mulling about and even fewer fish. In Rio Vista, most of the catch is being made up of small stripers unless you are specifically trying to get catfish because there are plenty of catfish to pull up. You may also find smallmouth bass, which are hanging out in the sloughs in the rockier areas. Finally, the game at Tracy is the catfish but you also find a relatively fair bass bite and quite a few stripers as well, which are appearing to trickle in from Grant Line.

The fishing in the saltwater areas has also been good this week. The Happy Hooker in Berkeley and Emeryville managed to enjoy some good fishing days between Friday and Monday, and they continue to have hot fishing all the way through Wednesday. The four different weekend trips that they took managed to result in a total of 183 stripers as well as 63 halibut. Another 30 bass were in the boat come Wednesday. The bass can be found over every single rocky structure along the main bay.

Rock finishing is reaching limits easily at Pillar Point, and there are plenty of blacks, browns and vermilions to choose from. Boats are doing especially well when traveling south below Martin's Beach and Half Moon Bay. Albacore are finally beginning to show approximately 25 miles away from shore. The current weather is likely going to keep the boats away for a couple of days, but there are bound to be plenty of albacore upon their return.

The San Francisco Bay is currently experiencing wind that is keeping most boats out of the water, especially along the south bay. The best way to get halibut and stripers has been to get out early in the morning. Shore anglers have had some luck with stripers along Candlestick, Seal Point Pier and Brisbane Tubes as well. Halibut fishing is especially outstanding when you visit Paradise and Southampton at San Pablo Bay.

Suisun Bay is offering worthwhile sturgeon fishing, especially around the Mothball fleet and with shrimp baits. The striped bass are particularly excellent in Pacifica and when fishing with meal jigs, small poppers and wood plugs.

The fish are still biting in the lakes this week. The trout are still biting around 15 feet below the water in Amador, where you will also find Bass about five feet lower. Over this past weekend, someone caught a 14 lb catfish. There seems to be plenty of trout between the Dam and Hat Island in the Camanche, with Bass swimming in the narrows and the main lake. The catfish here are still plentiful, especially along the camping areas in the north shore and south shore. The best times for trout in the Chabot are during the midmorning hours and early evening hours. The Bass are beginning to move into the shallows and they seem to be taking swim baits well. Catfish plants are going into the water every week as well.

The south end in the Clear lake is relatively slow, and you have to stay on the move offering top-water plugs for the best results. There are a lot of weeds here that are keeping fishermen from being successful. On the other hand, trout fishing around Del Valle is especially good at the dam, where bait fishing and trolling are both productive. Catfish can be found along the Marina, and check the Dam and the Heron Bay if you are looking for Stripers.

Trout anglers are walking away with limits at LaFayette every day, especially along the south end of the lake and when power bait is used despite the fact that not many trout have been planted lately, but plenty of catfish plants have been going in. Trout fishing in Los Vacqueros has been relatively uneven, though bank anglers tend to be doing well with the use of yellow Power Bait, especially down along the rock wall. The action experienced by trollers is relatively spotty at best, but they are doing better around 20 feet below surface, where Stripers can also occasionally be found.

If you troll the main lake at New Melones along the spill way and the dam you will find plenty of 14 inch to 16 inch Kokanee. The bite tends to be good all throughout the day, though there is a bit of a lull during the mid day hours. Bass fishing tends to be best around the coves. There are plenty of trout as well as Kokanee in the narrows of Pardee, as well as inside the mouth of the river and along Mel's cove as well. The Kokanee will be hanging out deeper than the trout. Check out the lake's eastern side for catfish.

At the San Pablo Reservoir you will find trout, but trolling is slow. The catfish bite is not yet kicking in yet. Try rainbow power bait especially along Bobber Beach and Farrell's Landing. Catfish are being planted along the Shadow Cliffs, and you will still find a fair number of trout here. Another fair fishing spot is Quarry Lakes where you will find alternating trout plants and catfish plants. This week alone a stock of 500 lbs of catfish went in.

River fishing has been good, especially if you are looking for a strong and solid shad bite, which can be found on the American River, especially during the evening and along the Nimbus Dam and sunrise. Shad fishing is also good at Thermalito in the Feather River, especially along the area of low flow. Another solid bet is Shanghai Falls. The salmon fly hatch is producing plenty of trout on the upper stretches of the Klamath, and the lower river is featuring a decent salmon bite.

In the lower end of the Sacramento you will find fair fishing for Striped Bass, especially along Colusa. The shad are also good, especially along the upper stretches of the river. In Trinity, you may find Salmon along the lower river but they have not yet moved upstream.

Delta fishing has been slow. The bass bite in Frank's Tract is definitely slow. While Stripers are finally begin to appear, most of them are schoolies. The majority of the catch for Striped bass in the Rio Vista is measured not in pounds but in inches. Some legal bass are being caught in the deeper waters along Rio Vista as well as the sloughs. Catfish are beginning to appear around the sloughs as well. Finally, the striped bass are finally becoming increasingly active at Tracy, with most catches ranging from 20 inches to 22 inches. The black bass bite has been slow as a result of the wind, and catfish are plentiful but they are small.

Saltwater fishing has been hit or miss depending on where you go. In Berkeley and Emeryville there was a mix of stripers, halibut and rock cod caught this week. It has generally been too rough to get all the way to the beaches, but there are stripers that can be found in the surf. The Happy Hooker trip on Wednesday had eight halibut and stripers with an hour worth of fishing remaining. Striped bass can be found along Pacifica, especially between Mussel Rock and Mori point and especially during the morning hours. The best bait here are pencil poppers and hair raisers. There are plenty of 20 lb bass here.

Windy weather is creating rough seas at Pillar Point, which has made the fishing rough lately. Boats were unable to get out over this past weekend, and it may continue. Big tides are slowing the halibut fishing in the South San Francisco Bay. You can find striped bass along the Oakland Airport area. The San Pablo Bay is providing a persistent halibut bite if you can handle the tides. The hot spot as of late has been Paradise. Finally, you can find some decent sized sturgeon at the Suisun Bay especially along the Martinez Pier. The first row of ships here is another good fishing spot, especially if you come packing anchovies and grass shrimp when you visit here.

Amador is offering good quality bass fishing with one to three pound fish in most cases. You can still find trout as well, around twenty feet below the water's surface. In the Camanche you are going to find catfish above all else, especially along the north shore and south shore's access areas in the morning. The bass bite is relatively fair, as is the bite for trout especially near the dam and the cold water area near Lake Pardee. Pardee is definitely offering good trout fishing, plenty of Kokanee and some large mouth bass as well. A 14-lb large mouth bass seems to have been caught last week in this area.

Quarry Lakes is offering trout fishing, but it has been relatively slow. The best options here are power bait fishing from the beach or trolling, either way. The San Pablo Reservoir is keeping the trout bite going and yellow power eggs have been a productive bait. Choose the main recreation area or the tower for the best results. Catfish plants are beginning this week along the Shadow cliffs, and trout fishing is also good here. Contra Loma is offering catfish plants on a weekly basis. The fishing docks are not open now, but the shore access has been great.

Trout are appearing about 10 feet shallower than usual at Rose Island, and the bass bite continues to be good here. The kokanee bite is solid throughout the day at New Melones. The best days are the windier ones. You can generally troll along Rose Island, the main lake in the dam area and the spillway for the best results, and 50 to 60 feet depths seem to produce the best results. Los Vacqueros is another good fishing spot for trout, but the wind is keeping many of the boats off the water right now. If you're shore fishing or angling though, you'll find good trout along the rock wall.

Chabot is experiencing catfish plants beginning this week. You will also find a nice selection of smaller sized rainbow trout, especially near to the marina. Clear is offering bass fishing, especially along the lake's north end, with a good top water bite in the morning. You should throw drop shot rigs, senkos and flukes for the best results, which right now are two and three pound bass with some as large as six pounds. Trout fishing is good in the Del Valle area, and limits are not uncommon here. Top spots include Heron Bay and the dam for sure. The catch of the week here happened to be a nine pounder. The catfish prospects are also good, especially near the Marina's south end.

River fishing is also good, especially when it comes to shad and trout. Shad fishing is remaining good in the American despite the fact that water flows have dropped somewhat. The best hours of the day to fish for shad here are the last four hours of sunlight, especially near Gristmill and the Sunrise area. The Klamath area just experienced a salmon fly hatch along the upper river which has created some truly excellent trout fishing. There is a solid evening shad bite in the Russian, especially along Hacienda's Bridge, Johnson's Beach, Vacation Beach and Monte Rio. Finally along the lower Sacramento you will find good fishing for trout, especially in the area near Redding. Between Hamilton and Red Bluff the shad fishing is particularly good as well.

The Rio Vista winds have made angling somewhat difficult in this delta, and a lot of the catch has simply been striped bass on the smaller end. Some of them are as long as 22 inches in length however. You will also find plenty of catfish along the river as well as in the sloughs. Frank's tract is offering good bite in the earlier part of the morning, especially with frogs and top water bait. You may also want to try drop shotting. The bass are between one and two lbs each, and you may also find Schoolie stripers in the area.

If you are looking for saltwater fishing on the other hand, the Happy Hooker has been heading outside of the Golden Gate looking for stripers in Pacifica and easily obtaining limits. On Saturday, on Sunday and on Monday as well this boat managed to bring back as many as 120 bass and many weighed in the teens. Rock cod fish trips have also been resulting in limits, which you may want to check out.

Fishing in Pacifica along the county coastline for San Mateo has been particularly productive with Stripers showing up along most of the beaches. Perch, crabs, Jack smelt and a halibut were all landed recently from the pier. From Pillar Point you will find easily achieved limits of cod, especially with local trips to Martin's Beach and Pacifica. The prize of the week here was a 25 pounder Ling cod. Quality has been good all over in general, however.

Along the San Francisco Bay you are going to find an outstanding striper bite, especially at Southampton. Halibut are definitely biting as well, but they are spread all around the bay. In the South end of the bay you will find plenty of stripers and halibut, especially at Hunters Point and the A-Crane. You will also find plenty of skiffs being attracted to Alameda as well as Berkeley.

Finally, you will find live bait drifting resulting in limits as well as near limits of halibut in the San Pablo Bay. There are a lot of halibut here that are falling in the 10 lb to 20 lb range, and some are even reaching into the 30 lb range. In the Suisun Bay, the Martinez Pier is proving to be a good spot for Sturgeon fishing by shore anglers. Last week four were landed. Ozol and Glomar are also good Sturgeon spots this week.
