A trip went out of Berkeley/Emeryville on Friday and brought back lots of rays and sharks, and one good sturgeon, but nothing like the 80-pounder that was caught here last week. More trips are scheduled for the weekend. The recent weather is expected to cause the sturgeon bite to increase over the coming days.

At Pacifica, crabbing hasn't improved after the big slowdown last week because of rough water. Only a few are being caught, and they're averaging about 7 inches. If you're looking for crabs, try Rockaway Beach and in the areas around Mussel Rock. Those are the places most of the small crabs are being pulled out.

Perch are biting at San Francisco Bay, and some sturgeon are biting there, too. For sturgeon, stick around Coyote Point and between it and the Dumbarton Bridge. If you're looking for perch, go to Oyster Point Pier. The perch that are coming out having been hitting a maximum of about 12 inches.

For sturgeon at San Pablo Bay, hang around the usual hotspots—the Pumphouse and China Camp. Live shrimp is working well, but a lot of anglers are losing their bait without a good bite because of the crabs. Sturgeon are biting well, so if you hit the right spot you'll doubtless get a hit.

Buoy 12, 2 and 4 are good spots for sturgeon at Suisun Bay this week. Also, the Ozol is still a good biting spot. There are a number of stripers in the Bay hanging around Seal Island and Pacheco Creek. The average weight is around 14 or 15 pounds.

Anglers with the best luck are only pulling a handful of small fish out of Frank's Tract right now. The black bass just aren't biting right now, and the hope is that the water will settle and the temperature will stabilize to make for easier fishing.

Use eel around the docks at Walnut Grove to get some keeper sturgeons. This water is really picking up for sturgeon bite. A bass tournament at Tracy last week was won by someone with a 19-pound bag of fish. The bass are starting to bite better, but catfish and stripers are nowhere to be found.

Sturgeon fishing is starting to really improve at Rio Vista. Muddy waters may be helping. A variety of baits like frozen shad and shrimp are working well. The usual good spots are still working. Hang around the Cache Slough and go as far down as Chain Island and the Power Lines. The debris is clearing, but still troll with caution.

Trout

Amador has been getting regular plants of about 3,000 pounds but recently got 2,000 pounds of small trout that weight up to 4 pounds. But a plant of trout that each weighed about 10 pounds was put it recently. The water is still going up. It's risen 7 feet in the last month.

Lake Camanche's good trout biting is holding. Kastmasters are popular right now, especially around the South Shore Pond. Trollers are still doing well, too. It's turning out to be an extra-good trout season here.

Lake Chabot offered up some trout last week that were over 5 pounds, all from around the east shore trail. Fishing is still good around Indian Cove, with that stretch down to Raccoon Point offering up the most fish. Power Eggs and Bait, as well as nightcrawlers, are working well. Contra Loma's luckiest anglers are using nightcrawlers or Power Bait. Even the ones with the most luck are only getting maybe two trout per trip.

Davis' ice fishing is second to none right now. Trout are going no lower than 18 inches, with the ice measuring between 6 and 8 inches. Watch the storms, because they can close access to Davis quite quickly. A couple of hours can net you up to 7 fish. Try around Coot Bay and Mallard Cove. And fishing's almost always better than average around the Dam. Go for multi-colored and bright bait.

Del Valle is clearing up after the recent storms and many anglers are catching their limit. There doesn’t seem to be a difference between shore anglers and trollers right now. Fish are biting along the banks and the center of the lake. Rainbow trout are really responding to soaked Power Bait and plain old worms.

If you want to get your limit of trout, hit the Lafayette Reservoir when it opens around 6:30 a.m. This is the time of day the fishing's best, though anglers have still been pulling their limits much later in the day. Power Bait and nightcrawlers are working well, as is bottom fishing. Los Vaqueros has slowed down to almost nothing, but trout plants are scheduled which should help. The San Pablo Reservoir opens on February 19^th, with a trout plant of 2,400 pounds going in just before. Fishing is expected to be good.

A record was set at New Melones this week. A 7.97 pound spotted bass was pulled out, setting the record for the largest, by the same person who set the previous record. Bass are biting well here, but many are around 2 pounds up to about 5. Drop-offs and flats that don't go down any lower than 40 feet are good spots right now. While bass are biting well, trout are in hiding.

Another 750 pounds went into Quarry Lakes on Tuesday. Hang around the Peninsula and Fisherman's Row, pretty much as usual, to get some of those. Shasta Lake has lots of fish right at the surface, particularly around Dry Creek and the dam. The water's rising which is bringing the fish up with it.

Steelhead

The Mad and Eel are still running muddy, but if you're waiting until the weekend some must settle by then. Rain's predicted, so it's hard to tell which rivers will be open and not. Be sure to check the river flows before heading out to fish. Chetco should be ready by the weekend if nothing changes much, and the Smith is clearing out.

The Russian River is muddy with falling water levels. You won't be able to fish here until early next week. Trinity is offering up a steady steelhead bite with light pressure and clearing water.
