Is boating allowed?

Yes, the management of the lake offers unlimited boating around the sea. There are no tides so this is a great place for beginners to learn the basics about safe boating.

Is there a boat launch?

There are numerous boat launches around Salton Sea:

* Al "N" Chris R.V. Park

* Bombay Beach Marina

* Desert Shores Marina

* Red Hill Marina (760) 348-2310

* Salton Sea Beach Marina (760) 395-5212

* Salton Sea State Recreation Area (760) 393-3058

* West Shores Boat Launching Facility (760) 393-3052

What you need to know:

The Salton Sea was actually formed by accident, but it has since gone on to be one of the most popular vacation destinations in this area of California. This is an enormous lake, that is actually bigger than Lake Tahoe. The lake is actually a sump for local farmers, and since the area gets around 3 inches of rain a year, it really doesn't get a lot of water.

The sea was created in 1905 when a nearby dam broke, spilling the contents of the Colorado River into the basin. It took engineers until 1907 to fix the breach and it was decided to turn the flooded area into a recreational and agricultural lake. This was a great decision, considering how popular the area has become since that time.

For those that can't be separated from their technology, the lake now offers WiFi access, and there are plenty of activities available for the entire family to enjoy. The area is home to a very unique eco-system and this is a great place to teach kids about the environment.

Is camping allowed?

Absolutely - there are 1400 campsites from which to choose and the fees are very reasonable.

What else can I do here?

This is a paradise for anyone that loves the outdoors. From off roading, to hiking and everything else you can imagine, you can do it all right here

Is fishing allowed?

Yes, but you must have a proper fishing license.

What kind of fish can I expect to catch here?

According to the lake management, "tilapia, gulf croaker, corvina, and sargo. The tilapia weigh up to 3.5 pounds, and the corvina have weighed up to 37 pounds and measured 42 inches."

Are there any regulations I need to know about?

If you plan on boating here, you will need to have a proper boating license and your boat will need to be registered. They do ask that you operate your water craft in accordance with state law during your stay.
