If you have never heard of the Ling Cod before, this is a fun fish to try to catch that can be found anywhere along the California coast, as far south as Baja. This is a popular fish that gives a lot of sport and the size is well worth the fight. It’s a little different from other types of cod, so you’ll need to use a few special techniques in order to successfully land this fish. Here are some tips to get you started.

First, you’ll need to make sure that you are looking in the right place. If you’re sitting by the shore hoping for the best, you’ll probably be disappointed unless by some fluke of nature, a Ling Cod happens to swim by. This fish loves the depths and will commonly be found on rocky bottoms, and in very deep locations. The best depth to try is around 300 feet, but they can actually go much deeper than that.

Since you’ll be fishing so deep, you’ll need to make sure that you have the right equipment with you. This is especially important since this fish can weigh more than twenty five pounds. You’ll need to make sure that you have an appropriate type of line for deep fishing and one that is strong enough to hold up to the hearty fighter. We recommend a 25 to 30# test line, which should be sufficient.

For a rod, you’ll also want to make sure that it is sturdy or you may end up with a snapped rod for your troubles. For reels, we highly recommend going with a 40 reel when you’re going after Ling Cod. The right combination of rod, reel and line will vastly improve your chances of successfully landing this fish.

Now, let’s talk about bait for a minute. The Ling Cod is definitely a fish that likes live bait, and they have a pretty large mouth. You’re going to want to use larger chunks so that there is a higher chance of hooking them properly. This fish has a particular fondness for shrimp and crab, so a bait consisting of crab meat is probably going to be your best bet.

For jigs, look for a heavier weight and a bright metallic color. This will be more visible on the bottom and the heavier jig will help keep your line deep enough to attract a Ling Cod. You’ll need to be pretty patient once you cast, and stay alert for a slight tub. The smaller Ling Cod may barely be felt when they are first nosing around.

Last but not least, once you have your Ling Cod, you’ll need to be a bit careful when you are gutting them. Stay away from the gills since they contain some very sharp teeth-like projections that can cut you if you are not paying attention. The meat of the Ling Cod can also look a little disturbingly blue, but this is completely normal and to be expected.

Amador: This is going to be a good location if you are heading out for some trout. The best places for you to go from the shore are going to be the Spillway and the Dam. Those who are on boats are having a harder time trying to pick up fish in the area.

Anderson: You are going to be able to find clusters of bass in the area because of how cold the weather has been. Once you find the cluster, you will be able to grab multiple fish with ease. Fish tend to cluster in similar spots, so you can return multiple times to find fish in the same cluster.

Berkeley: Crabbing has been strong in this general area, making it somewhat popular. Do not head to this area for shrimp – the catch has been iffy at best.

Berryessa: You are going to have to seek out groups of bass in the area here just like you will have to in Anderson. You are going to be able to found trout easily, now that they are closer to the surface.

Camanche: This is going to be one of the strongest locations for trout fishing, as the bite has been both regular and plentiful. You need to head out to Hat Island if you want to get the best catch of the day. You can also head out to the South Shore pond if you want to be able to hit your limits of trout.

Chabot: Trout fishing has been strong over all aspects of the lake. With that being said, people have found some strong locations on the lake. Head to Raccoon Point, the first Dock, Indian Cove, and the Burner.

Calero: You are going to have to get deep down into the lake if you want to get the bass here. Looking to at least 20 feet deep to get some good bites.

Chesbro: This has been a relatively week location for fishing. Most are not able to find catfish in the area.

Clear: The bass are actually going to be somewhat shallow, making them easier to get a hold of. Catfish are going deep and have not been biting over the last week or so. Crappie are gone, so do not bother trying to pick them up.

Coyote: This location only has access to the shore, and has not been biting well over the last week.

Del Valle: Del Valle is on winter hours, meaning that the park hours are from 7 in the morning until 6 at night. Trout fishing has been absolutely incredible during these times, however, bringing in plenty of limits for both boaters and shore anglers. There have been some bass caught by those using crankbaits and spoons.

Don Pedro: Head to the bank, as the trout are going to be coming in strongest in this particular area. Boaters are not managing strong catches on the lake.

Emeryville: Crab boats are going out and coming back with limits. Bay fisherman have not been happy with this area, however.

Los Vaqueros: This location has been slow over the last week but should pick up next week. There will be a 1200 pound trout plant within the next week.

McAlpine: Trout bite has been incredibly strong over the last week, but may dissipate. Anyone looking for bass and catfish should expect to get somewhat deep in the lake.

Oroville: You may have to get down to almost 50 feet if you are going to want to be able to pick up some bass. Salmon are being caught at the bank for those who are getting 50 feet deep.

Parkway: Trout fishing is strong in the area for those using yellow and white power baits. Head to the East Handicap Area and the Peninsula if you want the best fishing available. Catfish are still biting to those using Nightcrawlers.

Quarry Lakes: Head to Fisherman’s Row and the Peninsula if you want to take advantage of the strong trout fishing. You may want to head to the back of horseshoe lake as well.

San Luis Reservoir: Head to both the big lake and the forebay if you want to grab some fish here.

UVAS: This has been a poor location, and most are avoiding the area due to the weather.

Rivers and Deltas

Frank’s Tract: Striped bass are moving out of the area, somewhat running this area as a strong fishing place. The cold water has somewhat killed the black bass bite as well.

Pittsburg: Fishing has slowed in the area because Sturgeon and Striper fishing has slowed down.

Smith: Salmon are coming into the river even though the peak has passed. Some are picking up some steelheads but most are going for Salmon in the area.

Russian: Steelheads are coming into the area on a regular basis whenever it rains. Head below Forestville at Steelhead Beach to get the best fishing. May be able to fly fish next week in this area.
