Here are seven basic tips for improving your fly fishing experience.

- Use proper fishing etiquette when taking out your line.

Common courtesy has dictated that if an angler has a fish on the line, you should take your line out of the water. This is to make sure that they have plenty of space that they can land their fish. This is a very important role if you are fishing down river from the other angler, so make sure to stay out of their space if they are trying to land a fish.

- Use proper fishing etiquette regarding silence.

Whenever you are fly fishing, you need to be as quiet as you possibly can, which means leaving things like your radio and your children at home. Being quite has two advantages. First of all, it keeps the fish from being disturbed. Secondly, it keeps your fellow fly fishermen from being disturbed as well.

- Lend a helping hand for good fishing etiquette.

You should always be willing to help other anglers out. This may be as simply as helping them retrieve something that has floated down the river, or lending them a piece of equipment or some bait when they have none. Everyone is there for the same reason: To have a fun day of fly fishing, so you should be more than willing to help everyone else out whenever you can.

- Wade safely.

When you're wading, make sure never to fish by yourself on remote lakes or streams, wear a good pair of boots designed for wading, use a good wading staff that is strong and flexible, and know the area well where you are wading. Wading is an excellent way to access places you couldn't otherwise reach, but you need to be safe when you are doing it.

- Keep your tackle box well stocked and well organized!

Your tackle box is an absolute necessity so that you can keep everything organized and in its place. Keep your worms and your soft bit in a container away from other lures so that no chemical reactions occur. You should buy two or more smaller boxes to hold categorized lures. For example, categorize spinnerbaits into one box and worms into another. You may also want to buy seasonal tackle boxes for certain times of year, such as a jigs, plastic worms and minnow lures tackle box in the spring, and a tackle box for fall lures for the fall.

- Keep your fishing vest just as organized as your tackle box.

If you use a fishing vest to carry around your lures and tackle, you want to keep it organized to prevent yourself from needing to fumble around whenever something is needed. If you don't need something, leave it at home rather than allowing your vest to become crowded with stuff.

- Wear good shoes so that you can grip the bottom that you are walking on while wading.

Choose shoes with rubber cleat soles to handle bottoms made from gravel, sand, silt or mud.
