Grouse Lake is located near Pollack Pines, CA

Phone: (530) 647-5415

Is boating allowed?

No, this is a desolation wilderness.

Is camping allowed?

Yes, there are numerous campsites located around the lake. However, they are all only accessible by hiking in during the summer months or skiing in during the winter months. No motorized vehicles are allowed anywhere near the wilderness area.

Please note that all campsites are operated under a "first come, first served" basis and they are limited. The lake management asks that all campers follow the leave no trace policy during their stay here. The maximum group size is limited to 12 in order to preserve the area.

In addition, you will need a day use permit if you plan to stay longer than a few hours. These permits can be purchased from the Ranger District - reachable at the number listed above. They do have a few rules for campers:

"Please do not leave fish entrails in the water or bury them, as they do not decompose in high elevations. It is preferable to pack them out or scatter them in a discrete location where animals can consume them. Please bury human and dog waste and toilet paper 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from lakes and streams."

What you need to know:

This is an incredible lake and although it may not be easy to access, and there are quite a few rules in place to protect it, there are few bodies of water in this area that are this good. If you have never visited a desolation wilderness area before, we highly recommend it, but please do follow the rules to ensure that everyone can enjoy it. As the Desolation Wilderness Act of 1964 stated, we need to "ensure an enduring resource of Wilderness for present and future generations."

Is fishing allowed?

Absolutely. Even though the lake is no longer stocked, there are still plenty of fish here to go around. Please see the above note about disposing of fish remains.

What kind of fish can be caught here?

Rainbow trout and brook trout are plentiful in the lake.

What kind of regulations do I need to know about?

In addition to the regulations listed above, the lake management also reminds hikers and fishermen that although the lake is open all year round for fishing, getting there may be a problem, especially if there is a lot of snow.

Remember, in a desolation wilderness area, you are on your own. We highly recommend taking a GPS system with you if you will be camping in this area. It is also a good idea to have at least one member of your group be experienced in hiking and camping as well as what you need to know about desolation wilderness areas.

These are exciting places to visit, but they are not without danger or rules. However, by following these rules you can ensure your safety and still have a great time.

Even at optimum temperature levels, all alpine lakes are going to turn off from time to time. If you fish a lake for a few dawn or dusk hours then you are going to want to move if you are not seeing or catching any feeding fish. Since trout tend to cruise lakes in search of food, you should not need to cover an entire bank in order to find them as you would when it comes to a stream. Instead, you should be fishing inlet streams and outlet streams as well as points where trout are concentrated.

Areas that are near the shore that are less than twenty feet in depth are going to hold a great deal of the food in most of these lakes. Without having a depth finder that will pinpoint the depth of the trout, even trollers should be able to fish close to the steep banks or at least far enough out from the shallow banks that their lures are not going to snag very often. These inshore areas are also going to suit bait fishing and fly fishing as well.

Trout activity is going to depend on the water temperature in a big way. If the water is too cold, then the trout are going to become sluggish and are not going to feed as often. If it becomes too hot, then they are going to go deeper in search of cooler water. Make sure that you check surface waters and that you use a thermometer in order to find the depth and the area where the water is going to best suit the trout. It is useful for you to realize that the summer waters are going to be cooler by approximately 1 degree Fahrenheit for every 1.5 feet below the water's surface.

You should use maps in order to find the lakes that are going to offer prime fishing conditions. Small or shallow lakes are going to cool and warm much faster in comparison to larger or deeper lakes. Higher elevation lakes are going to peak as well as decline much later in the spring and much earlier in the fall in comparison to lower elevation lakes. You should always make sure that you are checking the temperatures and moving to find the right area where the fish are feeding.

With this particular approach, most lakes are going to be fished easily on most days. You should settle down with your bait or your lures near the inlet streams in the summer and on the northern side points during the spring and the fall. You should always make sure to keep an eye out for action on the surface when you may need a fly and a bubble. With lures, you should be casting out at 10 degree intervals in order to create a fan shape. If you do not get a hit after a complete fan, then count to five before reeling in each cast while making another casting fan. Repeat this, adding an additional five to your count every time your fan of coverage is created until you have either hit the bottom or hooked a fish. When you do manage to hook a fish, you are going to know how far to count to reach the same depth again.

Do not forget that big trout tend to be much more solitary in lakes, unlike smaller fish which tend to school near inlets and springs. If you want trout in a bragging size, then you should be prepared to wait a bit by casting a big rainbow finish plug or a large spoon and camping out until you find what you're looking for. To reach easy limits worth of hatchery trout, try spoons only an hour or two following stocking once the trout have recovered from their tranquilizer. Toss some gravel in to make them think it's feeding time and they'll bite in no time at all.

Here are seven basic tips for improving your fly fishing experience.

- Use proper fishing etiquette when taking out your line.

Common courtesy has dictated that if an angler has a fish on the line, you should take your line out of the water. This is to make sure that they have plenty of space that they can land their fish. This is a very important role if you are fishing down river from the other angler, so make sure to stay out of their space if they are trying to land a fish.

- Use proper fishing etiquette regarding silence.

Whenever you are fly fishing, you need to be as quiet as you possibly can, which means leaving things like your radio and your children at home. Being quite has two advantages. First of all, it keeps the fish from being disturbed. Secondly, it keeps your fellow fly fishermen from being disturbed as well.

- Lend a helping hand for good fishing etiquette.

You should always be willing to help other anglers out. This may be as simply as helping them retrieve something that has floated down the river, or lending them a piece of equipment or some bait when they have none. Everyone is there for the same reason: To have a fun day of fly fishing, so you should be more than willing to help everyone else out whenever you can.

- Wade safely.

When you're wading, make sure never to fish by yourself on remote lakes or streams, wear a good pair of boots designed for wading, use a good wading staff that is strong and flexible, and know the area well where you are wading. Wading is an excellent way to access places you couldn't otherwise reach, but you need to be safe when you are doing it.

- Keep your tackle box well stocked and well organized!

Your tackle box is an absolute necessity so that you can keep everything organized and in its place. Keep your worms and your soft bit in a container away from other lures so that no chemical reactions occur. You should buy two or more smaller boxes to hold categorized lures. For example, categorize spinnerbaits into one box and worms into another. You may also want to buy seasonal tackle boxes for certain times of year, such as a jigs, plastic worms and minnow lures tackle box in the spring, and a tackle box for fall lures for the fall.

- Keep your fishing vest just as organized as your tackle box.

If you use a fishing vest to carry around your lures and tackle, you want to keep it organized to prevent yourself from needing to fumble around whenever something is needed. If you don't need something, leave it at home rather than allowing your vest to become crowded with stuff.

In this article we are going to take a look at different fishing boats in order to determine which will best suit your individual needs. There are a wide variety of different fishing boats out there, and making an informed and educated decision is the best way to make sure that the one you rent or purchase is going to meet your needs the best. Traditional fishing boats can easily cost several thousands dollars, but there are plenty of alternative options out there for you that will not require a serious loan and collateral to obtain.

Here are some of the more affordable and more reliable options that are available to you when it comes to fishing boats and other similar floatation devices. Sure, some of them may be inflatable in nature, but when you consider the cost effectiveness, it is well worth it to try them out. Inflatable boats are actually capable of standing up to a lot of damage and punishment, and are still quite affordable which means that the average person can pick one up for their next weekend fishing outing.

Here are some of the types of fishing boats that you may want to consider -

Canoes and Kayaks -

These are some of the most affordable options when it comes to inflatable boats. Both of these options can work especially well as fishing boats, especially when it comes to accommodating either one or two people. Inflatable kayaks and canoes are especially useful for fishing in ponds, lakes, rivers, streams and other areas where you do not have a ton of water to work with. These types of inflatable fishing boats are also perfect for people traveling in RVs.

Runabouts for Four to Six Persons -

These tend to be the larger styles of inflatable boats, and they hold many more people within them as well. The higher quality versions are outstanding when it comes to adding an outboard motor for more power. The best place for you to buy one of these inflatable boat styles is from a manufacturer like Sea Eagle. Whichever manufacturer you end up choosing, make sure to look for a money back guarantee as well as a trial period if possible, as both of these characteristics indicate a product of the highest quality.

Individual Inflatable Fishing Boats -

These tend to be the most affordable inflatable boats but also the smallest option available. These boats are either personal pontoon boats or personal float tubes. Individual inflatable boats are excellent for river fishing and lake fishing, and they tend to be incredibly affordable.

Using the types of boats that have been outlines above will help you become a better fisherman or angler. You will be much more in tune with what you are doing when you are closer to the water in a smaller, personal inflatable boat. This is an excellent way for you to become a better angler and to improve your capability of catching the best fish in the lake.

Unfortunately for fishermen, the recent storms in the Bay Area have overfilled almost every stream and river where steelhead have been biting. The Smith, which had been excellent for salmon during the entire salmon season, was starting to really offer up quality steelhead. It didn't stay as steady with steelhead as it had with salmon during the last couple of months of the season. The steelhead biting wavered up and down just a little bit, but overall has improved steadily.

Thanks to the recent storms, the Smith probably won't be fishable until sometime next week. The Smith is a river that typically clears out pretty fast no matter how much mud gets churned up from rain and storms. But even given that speed, the storms have been severe enough that it's going to take a little extra time. The American River also tends to clear more quickly than some of the other North Coast Rivers, but even so it's not going to be ready until at least next week either. Both rivers should start to clear over the weekend, and maybe be alright by mid-week.

Over the last week anglers have had to stay in because of the storms. But with the storms clearing off and the injection of the rainwater into rivers, streams and the Delta area, the whole dynamic of these areas could change dramatically from last week to next week.

It may still prove frustrating for many anglers because, with the exception of the Smith River and the American, there's not going to be many steelhead biting for the next few weeks. Other areas are going to take that long to clear enough to be fishable. Fishing from the bank will be impossible because of the mud, and the lakes are so dark and thick the fish just won't be there.

The good news is that when it all clears off, the fishing could be vastly improved from how it's been over the last few weeks. Trout are still going to be planted in several lakes just as they have been, like Lake Amador that's been getting a hefty trout plant every week. So even though no one can really fish them and expect anything to bite, the fish levels will build up even during this downtime.

Another good thing to note about the recent storms is that the rain has not been cold. It might've felt cold to us, but as far as actual temperature it's warm enough that it's not going to slow the fish down once the water settles. None of the storms should have dropped any of the lake temperatures dramatically enough to do that.

When the storms do pass, if you have to take a break from steelhead because of the muddy water, give sturgeon a try because they should be biting well in the Delta as early as this weekend. Try fishing South Bay, San Pablo Bay and Suisun Bay. While sturgeon biting wasn't bad before, now that the tides aren't an issue anymore and the fresh water has been dumped in, sturgeon fishermen should do well.
