Within 20 minutes of Pacifica in California, there are three really popular surfing spots. Ocean Beach is located in San Francisco, Linda Mar is located in Pacifica and the Jetty at Half Moon Bay is located at Half Moon Bay.

Ocean Beach is truly unbelievable when it comes to surfing. Sometimes the waters are unbelievably wonderful and sometimes they are far from ideal. The swell is capable of being brutal, because Ocean Beach is quite open and more than capable of picking up all of the swell and all of the wind as well. Ocean Beach does not offer as much onshore flow, but the sandbars still tend to be great. Even the slack tide is capable of offering waves that you can surf on. The San Francisco Chronicle regularly writes about the currents and the waves here, because the waters of Ocean Beach have gained a name for themselves by providing novice and expert surfers alike with a wonderful experience.

Another name for Linda Mar is the Pacifica State Beach. This is one of the most crowded of all surf spots in the San Francisco Bay area. If you go during the hide tide on any day, you will find a good surf no matter what day you end up going on. The waves are smaller along the south end, which makes it a popular place for long boards. There are plenty of all types of waves, and you will find plenty of different types of wave devices including fish boards, short boards, body boards and kayaks among others. Some waves stretch to as high as 7 feet. Not only is this a great beach for surfing, but also there are bathrooms right on the beach and a Taco Bell as well. Although this beach is a bit overcrowded, it is well worth visiting as well as surfing. On the rainy days, this is pretty much the only place to find good waves in town, so check it out if you have not done so already.

The Jetty in Half Moon Bay is an excellent option, especially during the spring when the northwest wings are blowing and everything else is blowing outward. The best surf days here may not be as advantageous as the surf at Ocean Beach, but this is okay because there is still plenty of great surf here if you know where to find it. It can become a little crowded at the Half Moon Bay, but this is also well worthwhile if you consider how great the surf is capable of becoming. The peak will generally be packed with goof surfers, but you can paddle south where there is less competition and more space for practicing surfers.

There are numerous other popular surf spots to choose from, especially along the San Francisco Bay, but these are the most popular three because they are easy to reach and offer excellent waves.
