Sturgeon, Salmon and Halibut

At Berkeley/Emeryville a halibut trip goes out on Saturday so put your reservations in now. Last weekend’s salmon trip wasn’t very productive with over a dozen fishermen coming back with only 4 fish. Salmon have been biting well at Bodego Bay, though, and some are getting their limits. Fish are ranging between 10 and 20 pounds each.

At Tracy, nothing is biting particularly well, but all the fish are biting now and then. Striped bass, catfish and black bass all get pulled out one or two at a time, but there’s no rhyme or reason to it. Pressure has increased at Walnut Grove and the striper bite is improving.

Rio Vista hotspots seem to be Cache Slough for sturgeon and Decker and Sherman Islands for striped bass. But don’t be surprised if you don't get a bite and hear that a hotspot is somewhere else one minute, and then another the next. There’s no predicting the fish in these waters right now. Yozuris are working for trollers better than others. Small striped bass are biting well at Frank’s Tract. Stick near the banks for black bass that are spawning.

At Suisun Bay, poor weather cleared the water of anglers last weekend but at least one trip went out mid-week that hauled a limit of stripers, so this weekend looks good to go. San Pablo Bay is showing a better halibut bite than lately, especially at Red Rock, Paradise and Southampton. The biggest halibut this week was about 30 pounds, with most around 10 to 15 pounds. The Pumphouse is the usual good spot for sturgeon taking grass shrimp and ghost shrimp as well as some bass.

At Trinity/Lewiston, the cold weather and steady rain have managed to keep the bass slow and uninterested in bait or lures. As soon as the weather clears and the temperatures warm up the water, the bass bite should get back on track.

San Francisco Bay was a great halibut spot but wind and poor weather has muddied the water. Some near the Bird Cage are using anchovies and herring and are getting a few bites when the tide goes out. Pacifica is suffering under slow crabbing and a non-existent striper bite.

Trout

Lake Amador has a good biting supply of crappie, trout and bass right now, with the crappie hovering low, up to 20 feet down, and the bass and trout biting for those fishing from the bank.

The San Pablo Reservoir is one the rise and murky. Bass are preparing to spawn, but trout are hiding and sluggish in the dark water. The Lafayette Reservoir took 2 1,000-pound trout plants this week and hopefully that will improve the biting as it’s been dreadfully slow over the last several days. Loch Lomond is at least offering up a few more bass than it has lately, with one weighing close to 17 pounds caught and released this week.

At Berryessa, stick near Big Island and the Narrows near the rocks for spotted and smallmouth bass. Go north about the island for largemouth bass. The water’s coming up and it’s cold, but despite those things the bass are biting well in the spots, and scattered throughout the lake.

Don Pedro is a good spot for both salmon and trout right now. Middle Bay and Fleming Bay are good for rainbow trout. Hang your lures up to 25 feet down to get them. Humdingers are also working, as are Slimfins. Powerbait and spinners worked for some this week, too. Fleming Bay, along with Mexican Gulch, is also good for King salmon right now, and Kokanee are 30 feet down around Big Oak Island and Jenkins Hill. If you’re looking for salmon, stick to things like anchovies or shad.

Rapalas are still the best choice at Pardee, especially if you fish them shallow only down to about 10 feet. Brown trout weighing as much as 12 pounds have been caught in the dam area so hang around there for the most favorable biting conditions. Shadow Cliffs is probably a better bet for trout as they’re biting well, and most are big. A plant goes in next week, but in the meantime try spinners with nightcrawlers or Power Bait.

Lake Shasta is full of small fish that bite well, but few good sized ones. Digger Bay may be the best spot for salmon right now. Bass aren’t biting well. Anchovies, worms and shad are what anglers are turning to currently. Quarry Lakes is overfull and murky thanks to a lot of algae, and that’s keeping fish from biting hardly at all.

Lake Chabot is clearing in the central part but still murky near the bank and the creeks. Try near Coots Landing for trout because three big ones came out of there this week, ranging from 5 to 9 pounds. Clear Lake anglers are having good luck with plastics are the docks and minnow in many places. You might try lures over the weekend and early into next week if the water keeps warming up.

The Cowboy, Howden and Peninsula Coves are the best places to look for trout at Los Vaqueros as some are catching them there, but the bite’s pretty scattered and inconsistent elsewhere. Nightcrawlers are giving the best results, with shore fisherman having good results with Power Bait and Eggs. Scented bait works best.

At Collins, thanks to warming weather, fish are starting to bite well. A rainbow trout weighing 10 pounds was caught this week, with over 1,000 pounds of trout going in during the week. Bass fishermen are also doing fairly well.

At Del Valle, there are no real hot spots to speak of this week, as anglers are catching fish all over the area. Trout weighing 15 to 17 pounds were pulled out this week, so there are some big fish biting. Catfish are starting to bite more and more, but the bass seem to be in hiding. Try nightcrawlers and bright Power Bait for the best luck right now.

Sturgeon, Salmon and Halibut

At both Berkeley/Emeryville and Pillar Point, the salmon season is off to a poor start. Berkeley/Emeryville will start halibut trips this weekend. But at Monterey the salmon boats have been doing very well, with some getting their limit.

Tracy, some are getting small cats. Stripers are biting a little better than lately with some as long as 25 inches being pulled out. Black bass are still hovering near the shore but biting better. The striper bit is getting better at Walnut Grove too, particularly for trollers. Bank anglers are having mixed luck.

Rio Vista is offering up mostly small stripers concentrated away from the bank near Isleton. Bank anglers are having poor look. At Suisun Bay, stripers are biting well around the 2nd and 4th buoys, with some weighing as much as 20 pounds. Sturgeon are biting at the same hot spots as before, near the Ozol and Glomar, and the first line of ships. Bass are taking shrimp and anchovies best.

San Pablo Bay is still not a great place for sturgeon though now and then an angler gets lucky. Halibut fishing has been slowing improving and seems to have finally ramped up this week, with some being pulled out almost to 15 pounds, usually using live shiners. Stick around Red Rock and Paradise for the best halibut biting.

San Francisco Bay in is full swing of halibut season. Stick to the South Bay for best results. The Oyster Point Pier gave up an 11-pounder this week, with about a dozen total caught. There aren't any specific hot spots for bass right now.

Since Pacifica's surf calmed down, an angler got a 2-foot striper out of the Ocean Beach area with a prawn, but for most the fishing has been mixed. The Soquel Hole area in Santa Cruz has seen fisherman come back with half their limit.

Trout

The San Pablo Reservoir is just under full and muddy, but fisherman are still typically getting a couple of bites if they're using bait. The Lafayette Reservoir has bass and catfish both biting if you can find the right bait for the day. A few are getting a trout, and even fewer are getting several trout. The biggest fish this week was pulled in by a troller. A rainbow trout weighing in at 16-pounds and 8-ounces was caught using a Kastmaster.

Lake Camanche is still doing well for fisherman, especially those who are using Senkos. Stick to the shallow water for both bass and trout, as trout especially are hovering in the top 20 or 25 feet.

Rapalas may be the best choice for trollers at Pardee right now, as one got a brown trout that weighed 12-pounds this week. Trout are moving upstream, so head in that direction for the best bite. If you're on the shore, stay around the boathouse. And if you're looking for bass you can pretty much forget it as it's spawning time.

Power Bait brought in a trout at Quarry Lakes this week that weighed over 17 pounds in the Kiosk Cove area. Some are getting their limits of trout, but even of those who don't they're doing very well as trout are really starting to bite. There's another plant scheduled for right about now, so the bite should get even better.

Lake Chabot has had huge plants lately but it's still not giving up a good bite. Trout weight up to 2 pounds on average and aren't biting well because of the muddy, dark water. Bait is doing better for most anglers than anything else. Bass are biting occasionally but only in the shallows.

About 1200 pounds went in at Los Vaqueros week before last, and it seems to have helped. Now the stripers and other bass are starting to bite well, too. People are doing better from all over, including bank anglers and trollers. There's no one hot spot to speak of, as the fishing seems pretty consistence over the entire lake. Pressure's light at Lagunitas, but recent trout plants should help anglers who are on the water. Clear Lake is still too cold to show much bass activity. Once the weather starts to warm the bass bite should steadily improve. Some are managing to get a few with plastics.

Contra Loma isn't giving many limits, but a large number of those who go out come back with at least one fish, and some come back with a few. Channel Point is a good spot right now for trout, especially for those using Power Bait and nightcrawlers. A plant this week should spread that hot spot to other areas or at least expand it.

Trout have finally started to bite at New Melones and the salmon bite is improving, too. For the Kokanee salmon, try Glory Hole Point or Shipwreck Island. For trout, stick around Bear Cove and South island. Trolling at the top of the water or using something like Hummdingers in deeper water, as deep as 35 or 40 feet, can improve your chances.

At Del Valle, the biggest fish this week was a trout of about 16 pounds. Trout are really biting well in the Narrows and near East Beach. Try Power Bait in the south end and nightcrawlers for the best results. Berryessa results have been mixed because of inconsistent weather. The bass having been biting well when the weather's been fair, though, with some up to 4 pounds being pulled out. Stick in shallower waters, down to about 20 feet, and use plastics for the best luck.

Lake Shasta is turning out a lot of bass and trout lately, with bass fisherman having the best catch with Senkos and plastics in shallow water. Though the bass are hovering down to about 15 feet, the trout are right on top, especially near the dam. Power Bait is what most are using at Shadow Cliffs right now, with an almost 12-pound trout coming out this week after the storms which really messed up the bite for a short while.

Frank's Tract anglers are using plastic worms and swimbaits for best results. The fishing hasn't been very good here lately, but the bass are finally starting to bite more vigorously. A fishing guide caught a bass that weighed 14 pounds on Saturday, so the big fish are there if you can find them.

The weather's been too poor at Rio Vista for most to fish. Pressure's been light at Tracy, with few bass or sturgeon biting at all. Now and then someone gets a catfish, but that's about it. Walnut Grove's not very active right now either.

San Pablo Bay is still showing some great sturgeon fishing with many biting and many big ones biting, at that. Bass keep improving week after week, especially for those fishing with shrimp. Shrimp is bringing in some bass at Suisun Bay, but not as many as people expected. Even with so many fisherman out after bullheads were used last week to bring in bass weighing over 40 pounds, the catch hasn't gone up much, which isn't a good sign. Sturgeon are still biting around Ryer Island.

At San Francisco Bay, South Bay's not as muddy this week and most sturgeon are being caught around the Dumbarton Bridge. Some are getting small stripers but not many, and not many halibut are biting either despite improved weather conditions. If you want to get in on a sturgeon trip at Berkeley/Emeryville, get your reservations in now.

Trout

Kastmasters are the bait of choice at Lake Amador right now for fishermen looking for trout around the shoreline. A plant should have gone in this week that might see the fish spread out a bit into the more central parts of the lake. Some anglers are having luck with Roostertails, too. Bass are several feet down but moving well and biting if you can find them.

Not much has changed since last week at Lake Camanche. Trollers are still doing better than shore anglers, especially if they're using Rapalas or Power Bait. More trout seem to be hovering around the Narrows than anywhere else. Bass are taking plastics. They're deep, at least 20 to 30 feet down.

Last week's 9-pound catfish at Lake Chabot has been topped by a rainbow trout that weighed a bit over 10 pounds earlier this week. By the weekend the lake might be better, but in the middle of the week the water got murky and muddy. Nothing's biting very well right now.

Clear Lake has been inconsistent lately but it's worth taking a chance on in case you hit a good spot. Fishing from docks is better than trolling now, but if you do go out then stick with minnows and stay in the north part of the lake or near the middle. The bass are really biting minnows right now but some are taking plastics, too.

The bass are starting to bite at Contra Loma but they're far from a sure thing. Trout are biting well, but most are less than 2 pounds. To get some, stick with bright-colored Power Bait or nightcrawlers.

The Lafayette Reservoir is getting plenty of plants now, and since the trout have already been biting fairly well that should improve as long as the water stays clear. It's a bit murky this week and pressure's been light, but the water's full of trout that's there for the taking. Bass are still biting, too.

A record was set at Los Vaqueros this week. On Sunday, a salmon weighing 6.2 pounds was caught, setting a new salmon weight record for the lake. Trout biting has slowed down, but a 1,200 pound trout plant this week should help. The salmon bite is picking up, with many in the 3 and 4 pound range. Bass are making up the difference for the poor trout catches, too. Â Shore anglers are having better luck.

At New Melones, bass fishing has improved a bit over last week especially for those in the deeper parts of the lake using fake worms or Senkos. The trout are scattered and not biting well. Whatever you fish, keep it slow. You'll have better luck trolling than sitting on shore.

The San Pablo Reservoir got a plant last week, it's first of the year, double what many lakes get at once, at 2,400 pounds. Despite that, not much is biting there, mostly because of the muddy, murky waters. Even the bass have slowed down because of those conditions. Pardee is having the same problem with the mud, but some fish are hovering close to the surface out in the central area, not near the banks.

At Shasta, the bass are still hovering down around 25 or 30 feet and are biting Senkos and worms, so not much has changed since last week. The water's rising, but it's still far from full and not too muddy. Try Humdingers for trout and stick close to the top. The water's going up at Quarry Lakes too. A 1,000-pound plant went in Monday, but fishing's still been slow.

Steelhead and River Conditions

Of the North Coast Rivers, the Van Duzen and the Eel are still out right now because they're just too muddy and full. Mad has some steelhead but it's so muddy that anyone out is lucky to get a nibble. Some are going anyway and mostly coming back empty-handed. The Smith is doing well for anglers looking for steelhead, and usually the Chetco offers about the same type of action as the Smith this time of year, but it's fallen back a bit and is muddy. When it clears just a little bit the sturgeon should be biting well again, as they were excellent last week, even better than in the Smith.

Trinity had a lot of rain this week, with pounding rain on Tuesday, but it's fishable. Heading downriver is the best way to find some steelhead that appear to be heading out. By the weekend it might be clear enough to encourage better steelhead catches, as long as there's no more heavy rain.

Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut

A trip went out of Berkeley/Emeryville on Friday and brought back lots of rays and sharks, and one good sturgeon, but nothing like the 80-pounder that was caught here last week. More trips are scheduled for the weekend. The recent weather is expected to cause the sturgeon bite to increase over the coming days.

At Pacifica, crabbing hasn't improved after the big slowdown last week because of rough water. Only a few are being caught, and they're averaging about 7 inches. If you're looking for crabs, try Rockaway Beach and in the areas around Mussel Rock. Those are the places most of the small crabs are being pulled out.

Perch are biting at San Francisco Bay, and some sturgeon are biting there, too. For sturgeon, stick around Coyote Point and between it and the Dumbarton Bridge. If you're looking for perch, go to Oyster Point Pier. The perch that are coming out having been hitting a maximum of about 12 inches.

For sturgeon at San Pablo Bay, hang around the usual hotspots—the Pumphouse and China Camp. Live shrimp is working well, but a lot of anglers are losing their bait without a good bite because of the crabs. Sturgeon are biting well, so if you hit the right spot you'll doubtless get a hit.

Buoy 12, 2 and 4 are good spots for sturgeon at Suisun Bay this week. Also, the Ozol is still a good biting spot. There are a number of stripers in the Bay hanging around Seal Island and Pacheco Creek. The average weight is around 14 or 15 pounds.

Anglers with the best luck are only pulling a handful of small fish out of Frank's Tract right now. The black bass just aren't biting right now, and the hope is that the water will settle and the temperature will stabilize to make for easier fishing.

Use eel around the docks at Walnut Grove to get some keeper sturgeons. This water is really picking up for sturgeon bite. A bass tournament at Tracy last week was won by someone with a 19-pound bag of fish. The bass are starting to bite better, but catfish and stripers are nowhere to be found.

Sturgeon fishing is starting to really improve at Rio Vista. Muddy waters may be helping. A variety of baits like frozen shad and shrimp are working well. The usual good spots are still working. Hang around the Cache Slough and go as far down as Chain Island and the Power Lines. The debris is clearing, but still troll with caution.

Trout

Amador has been getting regular plants of about 3,000 pounds but recently got 2,000 pounds of small trout that weight up to 4 pounds. But a plant of trout that each weighed about 10 pounds was put it recently. The water is still going up. It's risen 7 feet in the last month.

Lake Camanche's good trout biting is holding. Kastmasters are popular right now, especially around the South Shore Pond. Trollers are still doing well, too. It's turning out to be an extra-good trout season here.

Lake Chabot offered up some trout last week that were over 5 pounds, all from around the east shore trail. Fishing is still good around Indian Cove, with that stretch down to Raccoon Point offering up the most fish. Power Eggs and Bait, as well as nightcrawlers, are working well. Contra Loma's luckiest anglers are using nightcrawlers or Power Bait. Even the ones with the most luck are only getting maybe two trout per trip.

Davis' ice fishing is second to none right now. Trout are going no lower than 18 inches, with the ice measuring between 6 and 8 inches. Watch the storms, because they can close access to Davis quite quickly. A couple of hours can net you up to 7 fish. Try around Coot Bay and Mallard Cove. And fishing's almost always better than average around the Dam. Go for multi-colored and bright bait.

Del Valle is clearing up after the recent storms and many anglers are catching their limit. There doesn’t seem to be a difference between shore anglers and trollers right now. Fish are biting along the banks and the center of the lake. Rainbow trout are really responding to soaked Power Bait and plain old worms.

If you want to get your limit of trout, hit the Lafayette Reservoir when it opens around 6:30 a.m. This is the time of day the fishing's best, though anglers have still been pulling their limits much later in the day. Power Bait and nightcrawlers are working well, as is bottom fishing. Los Vaqueros has slowed down to almost nothing, but trout plants are scheduled which should help. The San Pablo Reservoir opens on February 19th, with a trout plant of 2,400 pounds going in just before. Fishing is expected to be good.

A record was set at New Melones this week. A 7.97 pound spotted bass was pulled out, setting the record for the largest, by the same person who set the previous record. Bass are biting well here, but many are around 2 pounds up to about 5. Drop-offs and flats that don't go down any lower than 40 feet are good spots right now. While bass are biting well, trout are in hiding.

Another 750 pounds went into Quarry Lakes on Tuesday. Hang around the Peninsula and Fisherman's Row, pretty much as usual, to get some of those. Shasta Lake has lots of fish right at the surface, particularly around Dry Creek and the dam. The water's rising which is bringing the fish up with it.

Steelhead

The Mad and Eel are still running muddy, but if you're waiting until the weekend some must settle by then. Rain's predicted, so it's hard to tell which rivers will be open and not. Be sure to check the river flows before heading out to fish. Chetco should be ready by the weekend if nothing changes much, and the Smith is clearing out.

The Russian River is muddy with falling water levels. You won't be able to fish here until early next week. Trinity is offering up a steady steelhead bite with light pressure and clearing water.
