October 9th, 2008 — Boating, Yachts, hybrid
The popularity of hybrid cars has been spreading, and as a result, many people have been preaching the benefits of hybrid vehicles for some time now. Hybrid cars like the Prius are well on their way to becoming available as mass market products, but hybrid yachts are not quite there yet. Still, those who can afford a hybrid yacht can certainly own their own piece of "green bragging rights".
Ferretti is an Italian luxury yacht maker based out of Forli, Italy. Ferretti recently presented the first hybrid yacht to the world on Friday, showing the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 off at the Genoa International Boat Show in Italy. This hybrid yacht is over 20 feet long, and produces virtually no tailpipe emissions at all whatsoever. According to a statement produced by the yacht maker, the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 is a three deck yacht that is 75 feet and uses a hybrid propulsion system in conjunction with a super efficient hull to combine and reinforce one another to create a craft offering revolutionary solutions and design concept.
This green hybrid yacht runs on diesel fuel, and can cruise at 8 knots, emitting only 10 kilograms of carbon dioxide for every nautical mile traveled. The engine charges a battery pack which is also capable of powering the boat. When running in the electric mode, the boat emits far less Co2, as little as half a kilogram for every nautical mile, which is less than a sport utility vehicle emits over the same distance.
The cost of the boat is not currently being revealed, but it was estimated to cost around 3 million euros or $4 million USD according to an expert in the boating industry. If manufactured without the hybrid engine technology, such a yacht would be considerably cheaper, but Ferretti is confident that buyers will enjoy the exclusive and unique experience that it offers, especially when it offers total silence and nearly zero emissions. The Mochi Craft Long Range 23 hybrid yacht is currently on show at the Genoa International Boat Show, and people are already showing interest. While it's final price has not been made available, it does seem to be piquing the interest of the select few who can afford such a "green" luxury.
The potential greenhouse gas savings are vital, but the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 is gaining notoriety among people who are looking to achieve clean and noiseless boating, especially those that reside around ports and harbours where noise is an issue. Many of these people have been looking for ways to reduce noise and air pollution in the area, especially that which is drawn from large and small boating vessels in the nearby harbours. Small changes like these can have a large impact on localized efforts to reduce pollution of both the noise and air variety.
