I caught these Jack Crevalle at Sebastian Inlet in Florida (here is a webcam of the location). My dad and I had caught some live finger mullet with a cast net in the Banana River and decided to make the hour and half run to Sebastian to try our luck. The date was late 1996.
We were anchored inshore from the bridge on an out going tide. We were rigged on large spinning rods with 20 pound monofilament, 2oz egg sinker, swivel, 3 foot 80 pound test monofilament leader, size 1/0 circle hooks. The mullet were hooked from underneath the mouth and through the top of the bony head.
We caught 4 fish. The largest being the one on the left that went about 20 pounds. (I don't do justice to the glory shot. I am 6'10"). The big one took a good 10 minutes to reel in and went on several extended runs...
Jacks are a lot of fun to catch, but most do not eat them. The flesh is very bony and fishy.

Bad Day of Work = Time to go Striper Fishing
By Kelly MacCormack
Just wanted to share a little fish story to everyone! So I had a wicked bad day at work (you know the type of day I am talking about....the first day back to hell after a nice sunny vacation!!!) So on my ride home I thought... hmmmm who would want to fish??!!
I jumped on the phone to my brother Mike (founder of this group) and didn't hear back from him, so I called the boyfriend to see what he had planned ( watching the home run derby.....not a bad second choice of activities but fishing is way better). So anyways I make plans to see him, then Mike calls....he's ready to head out the door immediately to hit a hot spot for stripers. So I call the boyfriend back and blow off our plans together....I had to, fishing comes first.
Mike and I head out, a 15 minute drive to walk a mile down the tracks (mind you we didn't know when the next train was) in the heat...I was starting to think that the home run derby was a better idea.
Well we arrive at the "hot spot" and toss out some fresh Macs from Mike's earlier fishing adventure. Not 6 minutes later, my rod goes off. I knew then that the night would be fun! I land about a 20-24 inch fish, not bad....he put up a cute fight.
Then 15 minutes later WHAM my rod goes off again, this time the fish is screwing up the channel and I am fighting to hang on. Mike is walking me through things making sure the tip is up and I let the fish run. After a good 15/20 minute fight I see a shadow in the water, its my fish! Mike jumped in the water (shoes and all) to grab up the fish. We tape it to find that it was 41 inches long. By far the biggest fish I have ever caught. I landed a 38 last year and set my goal this year for over 40.
Thanks entirely to Mike, any advice that Mike has given to me has put me on the fish, and I am saying that because he's my brother, I am saying it because he is one hell of a fisherman.
Thanks Mike for helping me reach my fish goal this year!!!
Your the BEST!

The Great White Sturgeon
By Dave British Columbia
The story started when a couple of my buddies asked about a recent Sturgeon fishing trip I took on thr Fraser River. I live just outside of Vancouver, Canada, and the Fraser river runs from the interior of BC to the Ocean. The Fraser has a great Salmon run, and also holds the very prehistoric looking bottom dweller, the white sturgeon.
The guys were all ethusiastic about trying Sturgeon fishing, none of them had ever caught anything like these fish. The Sturgeon runs in size from baby 30 pounders to giants that are 12 feet and over 1200 pounds.
The Sturgeon is caught on the same kind of rod and reel that you would use for Marlin. They are called Mud Marlin locally because of the muddy river, and their tendency to leap right out of the water.
They may be bottom dwellers, but they put up an incredible fight. The method of catching the sturgeon is simple, a baited single hook on a leader with a one pound weight to keep it place on the bottom, and wait for the action to start.
These fish grow to be very old , no one actually knows how old, but the larger fish pictured which is 350 pounds and about 6 feet would be about 90 years old. This a catch and release fishery as the White Sturgeon is a protected species. I mean what would you do with 350 lbs of Sturgeon anyway?
A good day was had by all, we fished a half day for Salmon and had some great fish for th BBQ. The other half of the day we caught four Sturgeon , so everyone had a chance to fight one of these great fish.
If you ever in BC check out the fishery, you have an absolute riot catching this prehistoric fish.

I Ate the World Record Wahoo??
By Ron
I have only caught one really big fish in my life and I am 64.
Back in August 1973, I lived in Merritt Island, Florida. My neighbor bought a new 23 foot boat and after several average fishing trips, he and I were talking one day. I told him that I always caught fish a few years earlier when I had my own boat. So naturally, he invited me to go fishing one weekend.
We left Port Canaveral early on a Saturday morning and I told him to head 45 degrees (NE) until we got into about 120 feet of water. We were trolling with ballyhoo and within 5 minutes of dropping our lines, I had a strike. It took 40 minutes to land what turned out to be a 101 & 1/2 pound, 6 foot long, Wahoo.
The fish filled most of the usable space in the boat and we were already tired so we headed back to the port. We stopped in Cape Canaveral and had the fish weighted and measured. Then we continued home stopping at Tingley's Fish Camp in Merritt Island where I left the Wahoo to be smoked.
It made wonderful eating, however, a few weeks later I read in the local sports section of the paper that if I had certified the 30 pound test line I was using, it would have been a world record for that test weight line. A few years later another article referenced the guy (me) who ate the world record.

These Chinook Salmon (aka King Salmon) were caught by a by the husband and wife team of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Mars aboard the Sea Turtle Sport Fishing (story below)
Rick Mars and his Wife are the anglers in the picture. During the summer months, Rick goes out on the my boat, The Sea Turtle, as a regular especially when the fishin' gets hot.
I remember that was a Wednesday a couple years ago off... We were fishing off Rocky Point along the Marin coastline. The weather was perfect during that July and the ocean was calm with no wind and blue skies. Two party boats were working the area Skipper Jimmy Robertson's The Outer limits and Captain Jacky Douglas's Wacky Jacky. On Wednesdays, Jacky calls the Chronicle to give a up date on the fishing and up to that point in the week the fishing had been a little slow. Needless to say a good news is what we were hoping for when it was time for the Chronicle call-in...
We three where circling the area and both of the Party boat Skippers had a few fish aboard. I couldn't get a strike for hours, patience is the game, then it was my turn, the Mars family caught both of these 30lb fish within minutes. The best show that I never got on film was another decent Salmon that was lost... when a Great White showed up!!! It was a awesome sight when the big shark exploded the surface and inhaled the fish!
Rick and his Wife where in the Whopper report for the week and we came back to Sausalito with a couple nice Smokers. Perry

This King Salmon was caught by a well know local angler Joesph Meiswinkle Captain Perry's favorite angler of anglers. This fish was caught by Sea Turtle Sport Fishing (story below)

Last season we were following a school of year old fish, feeding in the large area between Point Reyes and the Farallon Islands in 250 ft a water. On this particular day, the feeding school of fish was outside of North Buoy.
It was mid September and it was great fishin'... flat water and a pretty good bite. The majority of the skippers on the VHF where happy campers for a change. There was lots of action for their customers and the deckhands were netting fish. For me it felt like old times where here again...
I had 5 old Buds aboard the Sea Turtle and once the action started we had no problem getting our limits. I usually find when the fish are on the bite, one rod will be getting few more strikes than others, however this trip everybody got to catch their limits... I am told that this particular Chinook was mighty tasty.
