If you are planning a trip to one of the many coastal areas or mountain ranges in California, there are a few books that will help you learn all that you can about these amazing wilderness areas. One of the best we’ve ever found is this book by George Wuerthner. Filled with no-nonsense advice, handy information and really useful maps, this is definitely a book to read before you go and to take with you on your journey.
The book is divided very logically into regions to make it easier to find the information you’re looking for. The introduction is a great place to start and offers some background information, important contacts, as well as a primer to camping and hiking in California. There are some great little nuggets of information that can be gleaned in these pages, so don’t make the mistake of skipping past them.
The first section covers the Northeast, from the Cascades to the Great Basin. Each of the major wilderness areas are covered in full detail, providing you with all of the information you’ll need if you plan on visiting. You can read each one, or just target the one where you’ll be staying. Thanks to Wuerthener’s style of writing however, you may be tempted to read the whole book cover to cover.
The second section covers the Northwest, from the Northern Coastal Ranges, down to the Siskiyou and Klamath Mountains. Once again, there are some great tips to be found within these pages. We particularly enjoyed the entry on the new proposed wilderness areas and look forward to the completion of these areas.
After this, you head on to the Sierra Nevadas, the South Coast Ranges and the entire portion of Southern California. This is truly one of the most exhaustive books on wilderness areas we’ve found, and no stone is left unturned. Don’t forget to check out the appendix section for more information from the author as well as some truly stellar maps that should be brought along with you on your journey. This is a book that not only informs, but if you should happen to get lost, you’ll have all the information you need right at your fingertips, provided you bring the book with you. Definitely a must read, and a must pack item that should be handed out to anyone thinking of camping, hiking or boating in California.
We highly recommend this book to anyone that will be camping, hiking or boating in California. Wilderness enthusiasts will also get a kick out of the resources, pictures and comments in the book. If you enjoy reading about the great state of California, or you just want a few pointers before your next trip, save yourself time and money by getting this book. It’s a great gift for frequent campers and hikers and by far one of the best resources on the subject that we have ever come across.
