Review of Devlin’s Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch-and-Glue Way by Samuel Devlin

If you've been thinking about making your own boat, but you're worried that you don't have the kind of equipment or the time to really make a masterpiece, this book is simply an incredible resource that will make it easy. Although traditional methods of small boat manufacturing are time consuming and require a lot of lofting and special tools, if you've got a "circular saw, a sander/polisher/grinder, a block plane, a framing square, a level, and a tape measure," you can build your own boat by following the instructions in this book.

Stitch and Gluing is quickly becoming one of the most popular methods of building a small boat from scratch, simply because it is so much easier and the results are completely comparable to boats made the traditional way. The main issue facing those of us that want to build a boat is a lack of proper equipment and the painstaking and time consuming process of trying to assemble it in your backyard. With this book however, you can accomplish the same things in less space, in less time and with less tools.

The book will walk you through every step of making your own small powerboat, sailboat or just a regular fishing boat. The author starts off with the very important process of learning how to design your own boat effectively. The tips are well worth the price of the book alone and you'll feel extremely confident by the time you reach the next section. The author does a great job of giving you that kind of confidence by breaking down each one of the steps until it is incredibly easy to follow.

Next, you'll get a quick look at how to set up shop to make the actual construction process much easier. This is incredibly helpful and organization is key if you want to make your own boat. You'll learn the steps you need to avoid and how to set up your shop for the most effective means of building a boat in a lot less time.

After you're already to go, you'll get step by step instructions on how to build the boat of your dreams, using those designs that you made in the first section of the book. Even if it is a bit daunting at first, if you follow the instructions and keep to the plan, anyone should be able to make their own boat with few problems. No boat is complete however without some finishing, so the last part of the book covers proper painting techniques and how to completely customize your masterpiece.

Overall, this is a book that we highly recommend to any boat owner or anyone that is interested in boating. Even if you don't plan to build your own boat anytime soon, you'll learn a lot about how boats are made and how to know what you're dealing with on the water. This is simply a great resource.

Review of Buying a Great Boat by Athur Edmunds

When the author of a book is an ex naval architect, you're pretty much guaranteed that you're getting some first class knowledge when it comes to selecting the boat that is right for you. This book did not disappoint in any major way and is truly helpful for those buying their first boat or even those of us that already have owned several. There are so many useful tips contained in this one resource that any buyer should take their copy to the dealership to make the process of buying a boat incredibly easy.

The design of the book makes it easy to do just that. It's a nice smaller book that's spiral bound, so it will be easy to reference as you go shopping. We highly recommend bringing it with you especially if you're still on the fence about the type of boat that you want to buy. This book will walk you through every single step of the process to make sure that you don't overlook anything in your purchase.

It's wonderful to come across a resource that pretty much negates any chance of having buyer's remorse. Purchasing a boat is never easy, especially if you're looking at a larger boat that will set you back more than a few thousand dollars. It's always tough to know if you're really getting the right one, but once you've read this book, you'll be able to walk in with confidence and make that selection without having any regrets. That right there makes this book well worth the cover price.

Even if you're not quite ready to purchase a boat yet, we recommend this book since it does cover some of the joys and pain of owning your own boat. You'll be able to decide whether perhaps renting might be the best bet initially or if you should just dive in and make that commitment. The author covers absolutely everything you could ever need to know about buying a book and what you need to look for to make sure that you're not only getting a great deal, but also that you're getting a good quality boat that will not cause problems down the road.

Our favorite part of this book was definitely the section that goes into what manufacturer's and their materials will never tell you about a boat. You'll get a bird's eye view of the systems that go into making a boat, but in a non-technical way that is easy to understand. He covers the process of manufacturing and what you need to look out for when it comes to telling the difference between a high quality boat and a real dog.

Overall, there was literally nothing wrong with this book and it belongs on any boat owner or future boat owner's bookshelf. The illustrations are rich and the author did a great job of translating terms that might be hard for the average buyer to understand. This is definitely a must read.

I Ate the World Record Wahoo??

By Ron

I have only caught one really big fish in my life and I am 64.

Back in August 1973, I lived in Merritt Island, Florida. My neighbor bought a new 23 foot boat and after several average fishing trips, he and I were talking one day. I told him that I always caught fish a few years earlier when I had my own boat. So naturally, he invited me to go fishing one weekend.

We left Port Canaveral early on a Saturday morning and I told him to head 45 degrees (NE) until we got into about 120 feet of water. We were trolling with ballyhoo and within 5 minutes of dropping our lines, I had a strike. It took 40 minutes to land what turned out to be a 101 & 1/2 pound, 6 foot long, Wahoo.

The fish filled most of the usable space in the boat and we were already tired so we headed back to the port.  We stopped in Cape Canaveral and had the fish weighted and measured. Then we continued home stopping at Tingley's Fish Camp in Merritt Island where I left the Wahoo to be smoked.

It made wonderful eating, however, a few weeks later I read in the local sports section of the paper that if I had certified the 30 pound test line I was using, it would have been a world record for that test weight line. A few years later another article referenced the guy (me) who ate the world record.

4 Types of Boats

If you are looking for a fun and enjoyable activity for yourself, your friends or your family, then give boat finishing a try. There is nothing better than heading off on your very own boat with your family or friends, talking about all of the fish that you intend to catch. Here are some fishing and boating tips that will help make this event even more enjoyable.

There are numerous different types of fishing and boating, each one offering its own specialized requirements. You can dangle some bait over the edge of a canoe with a string, or you can bring a powerful cabin cruiser out into the water with high tech fishing rods. As long as your boat is seaworthy, the rest is up to you. Here are some of the popular fishing boat choices to consider when exploring fishing and boating tips and tricks.

Freshwater Boats -

If you enjoy fishing in freshwater areas such as lakes, rivers and streams, then the boat that you need does not have to be massive. Instead, choose a boat made from fiberglass or aluminum. Make sure that the boat is easy to transport and light weight. Popular choices for freshwater fishing boats include bow riders, walley boats and runabouts, especially those offering a small console or a dual console.

Offshore Saltwater Boats -

Fishing out in the open sea is one of the more common types of fishing, allowing you to catch larger fish using heavier tackle. In this case you need a heavy, dependable boat because you are going to encounter a variety of different weather conditions and other situations on the open sea, and relying on your boat is absolutely vital. You may want to consider twin outboard motors or single outboard motors, and you are definitely going to want a center console or a cuddy cabin. You can even go further by buying a more luxurious boat, such as a blue water or a convertible with luxury quarters.

Inshore Saltwater Boats -

If your tastes run up to fish like bonefish, redfish, snook, trout or tarpin, then you are going to want an inshore saltwater fishing compatible boat instead. You are going to be looking for a lighter boat that is 25 feet or less. You only need a single outboard motor when fishing inshore, such as a flat or baby boat, which offers excellent deck space while still floating well in shallower waters.

Bass Boats -

These boats are best suited for tournament fishing and sport fishing. They tend to be colorful and fast, and they tend to ride low in the water which is preferable for bass boats with trolling motors mounted on the bow of the boat. You can generally choose between aluminum or fiberglass, and both will provide excellent platforms for fishing making casting much easier.

Float Tubes -

Float tubes may not necessarily be boats, but they're very handy for fly anglers that like to fish in mountain streams, lakes, ponds and some rivers. These float devices have seats, partially submerging the angler so that they can better navigate through the water.

Green Valley Lake, San Bernadino County, CA

Green Valley Lake is located in: San Bernadino County

Phone: N/A

Is boating allowed?

Paddle boats, kayaks and canoes are allowed, but no motorized boats are permitted on the lake. Since this is more of a residential area and the lake is very quiet, the community prefers to restrict boating to non motorized only. The upside is that it is a lot easier to catch fish here.

Is there a boat launch?

No, due to the fact that only non-motorized boats are allowed on the lake. You can however launch from most places on the shore.

Is camping allowed?

Yes, there are numerous campsites around the lake, and they are all very well maintained. This is a very family-oriented area and you'll find plenty of places to camp to enjoy the weekend. The facilities are pretty bare minimum, but overall, it's a nice place to camp. You'll find five different spots around the lake, including:

Green Valley Lake Campground

Crab Flat Campground

Tent Peg Group Site Campground

North Shore - Lake Arrowhead

Dogwood Campground

Is fishing allowed?

Yes, fishing is allowed here and you can actually do very well. The lake is well stocked and because it is so quiet, it is much easier to catch fish. You'll easily be able to get your limit in a few hours.

What kind of fish can you expect to catch here?

The usual round up of crappie, bluegill, a few catfish and if you're lucky some great bass and trout.

Are there any regulations?

Beyond the non-motorized boat rule, normal fishing restrictions apply. You must have a valid California fishing license with you before fishing on the lake. Boats however can be operated without worrying about licenses and registration. If you don't have your own boat, you can rent one at the lake.

About the Lake:

This is a very family oriented lake, located right in the heart of a small community of about 800 people. It is right next to Big Bear lake, but you won't find any of the noise or rowdiness here. If you like to party while you boat, this is not the place to do it, but if you want to teach the kids about fishing, have some fun camping over the weekend, or enjoy a quiet afternoon, this is the ideal spot. We found everything to be very well maintained, the water was clean and the fishing was above par.

It may not be the most well known lake in the area, or the most trafficked, but this is definitely one of our favorites in the Southern California area. One of the area's best kept secrets, and let's hope that it stays that way.

What else can I do here?

In addition to camping, fishing and boating, this lake is located right next to a wilderness area, so there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun. Whether you enjoy hiking, mountain biking or rock climbing, you'll be able to do them all right here.
