Here is a unique secret about San Francisco: Even the locals are often unaware of all of the gems that this fair city has to offer to its visitors. Here are some of the unique things that you might like to see and get to know while you are visiting San Francisco:
Golden Gate National Recreational Areas in San Francisco:
There are few urban shorelines that are capable of containing the level of diversity that is offered by this area, wrapping around the northern and the western edge of San Francisco while offering features that are historic, scenic, urban and natural. The entrance to the San Francisco harbor is found at the Golden Gate Bridge, and this happens to be one of the most famous views in the entire world. The shoreline here provides to be a truly historic and scenic view, offering a completely unique perspective of what San Francisco has to offer, including ships that were known for fostering early trade and immigration and fortifications that were built to defend the city's residents. Today in the San Francisco recreation area you will find places where you can learn, explore, play and relax.
Some of the most famous sites and historical features in San Francisco happen to be situated all along the city's shoreline. The eastern side happens to be the most active, which is where you will find an aquatic part, the maritime national history park and fisherman's wharf, all of which are truly popular destinations for tourists and locals alike. You will also find a boarding location that is designated for the ferry to Alcatraz. The rest of the shoreline in this park area, which runs from the San Francisco Golden Gate to the Aquatic Park is completely continuous, and it offers a truly pleasant bike ride or walk along the 3.5 mile long Golden Gate Promenade. You can discover a number of quiet park areas all along the way as well. There are plenty of nice changes of pace here as well including Crissy Field and Upper Fort Mason. When you reach the Golden Gate Bridge you will be able to see ships as they enter and leave the Bay of San Francisco.
Alcatraz is close to the San Francisco city, but it was off limits for many years because it served as a notorious prison. Now it is a unique tourist attraction that seems capable of attracting and capturing the attention of just about everyone. Visitors are now given a chance to explore everything that this island has to offer. There is an introductory slide show that allows visitors to become oriented with the island. There are plenty of programs provided about the prison's history and its use by the military. It also has a rich natural and cultural history as well.
If interested in going to see Alcatraz, make reservations sooner instead of later because most people that visit this city want to see Alcatraz, and there isn't enough space for everyone on the ferry.
